The Conservatives parliamentary spokesman in Ipswich, Paul West, believes the government has lost the plot with its latest proposal that would see motorists convicted of speeding having to pay compensation for victims.
The plan, published on Monday, is one of several changes to the funding of victim support services.
Motorists fined for speeding would face a levy of £5.
Paul said:
I fully support the idea of payments being made to victims, but not from completely unrelated offences.
No doubt there will be a whole new government department created to administer this, the cost of which will exceed the revenue raised by the levy.
Perhaps before introducing another fine on the motorist the government should make an attempt to collect all the outstanding and defaulted fines that currently exist.
If anyone believes that victims of crime will see any financial benefit from this, think again. I am afraid its just another wheeze to raise revenue for the chancellor who has got his sums wrong
