Tredegar are defeated by Newport High School Old Boys 29-30 in this afternoon's league game.


Tredegar have been drawn at home against Fairwater in the second round of the Konica Minolta Cup.


Tredegar’s director of coaching Robert Johnstone has announced several major new signings to strengthen the Asda Division 2 squad.
Whilst Tredegar lie mid-table in the WRU Asda Division 2 League and have progressed into round 2 of the Konica WRU cup, Johnstone has strengthened the squad in mid-field, at halfback and in the pack.

Johnstone said “ Whilst we have depended on a small squad to start the season it was always my intention to secure the right players to add to and enhance the playing capabilities of a squad that is capable of putting Tredegar RFC back on the map as a force in Welsh rugby.”

Johnstone has signed former Newbridge centre Ian Marsh to add stability to the midfield and exciting scrum half Ross Turner has signed from 1st Division Fleur de Llys.

Jamie Noble in the boilerhouse has transferred from Pontypool and will prove an effective partnership with Ben Harding , Rhys Roberts and Jack Dawson giving Tredegar more options in the line-out.

Johnstone added “ Whilst these immediate signings will strengthen our squad we are in negotiations with an Australian prop forward who plays for a first division side in Sydney and once the formalities are completed we will announce full details of his acquisition shortly, but I am always looking for local players who can add to the Tredegar cause”

Tredegar’s efforts off the pitch need to be mirrored on the pitch as with first class facilities which is the envy of teams in higher divisions, Tredegar deserves rugby of the highest quality.


Tredegar make the long journey to Anglesey worth it by defeating Llangefni in the Konica Minolta Cup. Llangefni 5 Tredegar 33


Tredegar are defeated away at Penallta by 26 points to 16. Next up is the Konica Minolta Cup away at Llangefni on Saturday 27th October.


Tredegar defeat Mountain Ash by 20 points to 16. Next up Penallta (A) on 20th October, followed by a trip to Anglesey in the Konica Minolta Cup First Round


Tredegar's friendly with Blackwood has been cancelled as Blackwood are unable to field a side. A full squad training session will instead take place.


Tredegar entertain Blackwood in a friendly on Saturday at 2-30pm at the Recreation Ground.


Tredegar have been drawn away against undefeated Division Four North side Llangefni on Anglesey in the first round of the Konica Minolta Cup


Unfortunately Tredegars' away fixture against Dunvant on Saturday has been cancelled. Disappointingly the Tredegar coaching staff were forced into having to make this decision when an injury crisis hit the club this week. A club spokesman said. " We were forced into having to make this decision when our squad, particularly the front row positions became decimated by injuries this week. We were looking forward to the trip to Dunvant, but the current injury position makes it impossible to select a representative side.

We fully appreciate the co-operation of the Dunvant club in trying to play the fixture and extend our apologies at the short notice of cancellation but our hands were tied due to the injuries in having to make this decision.

Welsh rugby has lost one of its greatest servants with the news that the Honorary Life Vice Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, Sir Tasker Watkins, died in hospital in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 9 September through natural causes.

Tredegar record their first win of the season by beating ynynsybwl 31-7 at The Recreation Ground


Tredegar are pleased to announce that Joe Campbell will be our club captain for the forthcoming season


Tredegar are defeated by Builth Wells in the opening game os the season by 13 points to 7.


Tredegar RFC welcomes back one of its favourite sons as former player ,Tony Edwards takes over the coaching duties. Edwards' love affair with Tredegar lasted over 10 years with the back row man notching up over 500 appearances for the Division 2 team . Edwards' playing pedigree also included spells at Ebbw Vale and Newport, as well as representing Breconshire on numerous occasions and since hanging up his boots has cut his teeth coaching at Abergavenny.

Whilst Tredegar finished 3rd and 5th in the last two league campaigns, Edwards main aim is to produce a balanced side, strengthening the forwards to complement the exciting back division that has proved so successfull in recent years. Edwards said " I want to instill a belief in players that they can achieve success and it is my intention to improve players performance and skill levels to ensure success for Tredegar. Life in Division 2 next season will be extremely difficult with former Division 1 teams Builth Wells, Ystrad Rhondda and Abercynon appearing on the fixture list and with Penallta achieving Division 2 status the first two months of the season will be extremely testing."


Edwards will be assisted by Dave Davies who will continue in his role as player / backs coach, whilst former captain Paul Edwards has taken on the mantle of youth team coach. Edwards stated that whilst he is in negotiations with a few key players and some new faces he is pleased with the early turnout of the squad at the Tuesday and Thursday training sessions and extends an invitation to any players who want to play for TREDEGAR RFC to contact the club or come along to the training sessions where they will be made most welcome.


Tredegar have lined up a pre-season friendly away to Dunvant and are hoping to announce further pre-season games shortly.


The fixtures for the 2007/2008 season have been released, and are on our FIXTURES page. We begin away at Builth Wells, and end the season with a home game against Llanishen.



Tredegar's annual Dinner and Awards ceremony was attended by Welsh rugby legend Phil Bennett who congratulated the team on finishing 3rd in the Asda Division 2 East playing scintillating rugby that caught the imagination, just missing out on promotion. Bennet also paid tribute to the hardwork of the management team in the development of youth rugby in the town and also the improvements to the clubhouse and the installation of the new floodlighting system.

Whilst the dinner was attended by the playing squad, youth team , officials and invited guests Tony Lewis thanked everyone for their efforts and excellent support and hoped it would continue next season.


Simon King deservedly scooped the main club awards receiving Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year, whilst Jonathan Evans received the award for Most Promising Player. Player Coach, David Davies carried off the Clubman of the Year award for his efforts both on and off the pitch.

M C, Allan Meddlicott provided a wealth of rugby knowledge and statistics on behalf of the supporters club and Malcolm Higgs presented the Supporter's Clubs Awards to Simon King ( Supporters Player of the Year ), Craig Lewis ( Supporters Most Promising Player ) and David Davies also received their Clubman's Award.

17 year old Darren Hughes received the Youth Player of the Year award whilst fellow forward Joel Moody received the Youth Most Promising Player. Gethin Phillips received the Youth Clubman of the Year award.

New coach Tony Edwards was formally introduced and stated his intention was to improve Tredegar's fortunes next season with the main aim being promotion. Edwards stated that pre-season training was already underway at the Recreation Ground on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 pm and all players, current or new would be made more than welcome.


Tredegar RFC enjoyed their best season on and off the field for many years finishing in 3rd position in the Asda Division 2 league just missing out on promotion to Division 1.

Tredegars's third spot saw them achieve 14 wins, racking up 595 points, the third highest in the division and only conceeding 397 points emphasizing one of the best attacking and defensive records in the league. Tredegar's formidable attacking play saw them score 100 tries in total in all games played demonstrating the attractive attacking rugby philosophy of the coaching team.

Tredegar's 83 points drubbing of Croesyceiliog was the biggest victory in the league and Gareth Kearney was the club's top point scorer passing 200 points for the season adding to his career best of 400 league points. Daniel Morris completed over 150 appearances in a Tredegar shirt, amassing a phenominal career best of 400 points in total, with a seasons best performance scoring his 5th hatrick of league tries, being the clubs leading try scorer and with 97 touchdowns under his belt is just 10 tries short of Paul Briggs' all time record of 107 scores .

Andrew Green exceeded 200 points in his Tredegar career whilst Rhodri Jones collection of tries saw him break through the 100 point barrier in all games. Christopher Thew added to the Tredegar cause with 11 tries, 4 penalties and 6 conversions with Chris Edwards athletic prowes saw him being the leading try scorer in the forwards, touching down 9 times.


Whilst this season's campaign saw David Davies play more than 200 games for Tredegar, Stuart Jarman and Daniel Morris notched up 150 appearances whilst Joe Campbell and Ian Jones became members of the exclusive centurians club. Ryan Williams, Brett Mountney, Jack Dawson, Matthew Penny and Simon King all passed the 50 mark league milestone and Gareth Kearney's 10 conversions in the cup demolition of Crynant equalled Mark Fleet and Gareth Chapman's kicking prowess.

Tredegar enjoyed their best cup run for several years reaching the 4th round after disposing of First Division Llanharan finally bowing out to Division 1 West champions Bonymaen.

Crawshays Welsh XV honoured Tredegar with a fixture, narrowly defeating the home team when they opened Tredegar's state of the art floodlighting system and the management team are indebted to the Tredegar Town Council, Tredegar's local Blaenau Gwent Borough Councillors, Howard Francis and ancillary suppliers for their whole hearted support. Following the fixture Tredegar players Leigh Taylor, Chris Edwards, Simon King and Daniel Morris were all invited to represent Crawshays, donning the world famous cerise jersey.

The Tredegar management team congratulate Ebbw Vale RFC and Abertillery BG in their magnificent achievements this season and extend grateful thanks to all the Tredegar players, coaching and support team, Tredegar Supporters Club, sponsors, members , supporters and the public for their help and support and welcome old friends and new to the Recreation ground when the new season starts in September.
