The Pub Poet
Les Baynton a.k.a. Derby CAMRA's first Beer King (pictured left enjoying his other favorite pastime) is not one to keep his light under a bushel, whatever that may be.
Looking back to early Autumn as thoughts march forward, is some new prophetic words of rhyme penned by Les for you to ponder.
LOOKING FOR A POEM
Echoes of the past
Hang in the air
Of Britain’s oldest brewery,
An English oak mash tun
Still in use, a steam dray,
Sepia records, old posters,
East End hop pickers
Smile out from forgotten fields
And a Spitfire cockpit
Evokes glorious images.
Outside fields of barley
Seem to whisper as they ripple
And all round the hops hang
Naturally beautiful, church-blessed
All this coming together
To create this masterful brew,
This aromatic, taste tantalising beer,
It is ‘poetry in a glass’

This one is more seductive as you drink in the pure intoxication of your favourite beverage.
Hope it tantalizes your taste buds and you seek out the amber nectar down your local...
Amber Lady
You caress my lips
as I savour your taste,
Your perfume tantalizes
as I drink in your charms,
I'm tempted by the fullness
of your beautiful body,
My senses are overwhelmed
Then just emptiness,
an anxious thought.
Can I ever find
another beer
as beautiful as you?
Over to You
Have these two poems got your creative juices flowing?
Or is there another side to ale that needs exploring in melodic prose?

Here's Tony Fisher's thoughts:
PINT OF TWO HALVES
"bass is best"
so we thought
back in '73
beer at
two bob a pint.
now its two bob a sup
foaming at the mouth
leaves a bitter taste,
despair!
a chancellors disgrace
supermarkets laugh at
our misfortune for to take,
a pint or two in haste
can't drown your sorrows
here
the pubs closed down last year
rebuilt with
pretty cottages
---
alas no beer here!
It goes against the grain.
Will we see
a pint
at two bob again?
The pub open on the green?
I'm hoping mad,
my dad drunk
shippos beer
he'd ferment in his grave
if he only knew,
that ale aint cheap
no more.
Cheers Tony!
