Beer Surveying
The National Beer Scoring System (NBSS) is a 6 (0-5) point scale for judging beer quality in pubs.
It is an easy to use system that has been designed to assist branches in selecting pubs for the Good Beer Guide and also monitor beer quality by encouraging CAMRA members from any part of the world to report beer quality on any pub in the UK.
Rationale
The NBSS was drawn up following a survey in 2001 which found that branches who had implemented a beer-scoring system valued the information it provided.
A workshop on the subject at the National Members' Weekend of 2002 attracted over a 100 members and agreed that a national scoring system should be implemented using a 0-5 point score.
The National Members' Weekend of 2008 added a half point gradation between whole numbers. This was designed to give members the extra flexibility to score a beer half way between two scores. Some may say this is like sitting on the fence but others may argue it's more precise - whatever is the case, please send in your scores using the form below - we value your feedback on pubs you visit and their beer quality!
National Beer Scoring System (NBSS)
What do the scores mean?
0 Undrinkable - No cask ale available or so poor you have to take it back or can't finish it.
1 Poor - Beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with
considerable resentment.
2 Average - Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn't inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing.
3 Good - Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.
4 Very Good - Excellent beer in excellent condition.
5 Perfect - Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.
How often do I complete a card?
This is down to personal preference. You may choose to score per beer or per pub, averaging your score for each pub visit. In the latter case, the beer name (unless you’ve only been drinking a single beer) can be left blank.
How is the information being collated?
Initially the NBSS will use credit card size forms, which can be used by members straight away. Please download the PDF Survey Form (47Kb) below:

Completed cards should be used to fill in the online form below which is then sent to the Branch Pub Surveys Coordinator.
If you're submitting surveys for pubs outside the branch area (Derby Branch Area map is available at Google Maps), please use the CAMRA National Beer Scoring website at:

What do we as a branch do with the scores we receive from the NBSS?
Online submission of beer surveys is a new facility available to our Branch.
We may decide to incorporate the scores into our existing scoring system or record them separately.
Nothing is changing with regard to the way that Good Beer Guide entries are selected. This is still a hotly contested Branch matter.
The scores from non-branch members are additional information that will help us as a Branch. We would obviously welcome you to join us as a member and hope that since you are reading this web site you are already considering membership.
Please see the left hand side bar Join Us Today link which explains the benefits of CAMRA membership and the Contact Us page for local Branch contact information.
