Interview 7 - 28th January 2006 - Russell Leiter

A new year and a new Interview with Racing Club Fantana wing man Russell Leiter - I met up with "Trigger" at a local Jewish delicatessen in Stamford Hill where he introduced me to some of Israel's finest exports...

OC: So what are all these different foods then Russell?

well there are many foods which all come with an acquired taste. One being the sesame ring pretzel which is a must or for the more daring the bissli falafel. my favourite would have to be Honey or as the Israelites would call it "Yad Mordechai". Yad Mordechai Honey is the most well known Honey from Israel. Israeli Honey is Holy Land Honey and is special and unique and comes in different flavours. Just like condoms.

OC: How have you found playing for Racing Club Fantana this season?

well when i first came to the club I didn't speak much English.  Hebrew was and still is my first language. i was welcomed by all sorts though from all different backgrounds, Greeks, Africans, and Asians. so I felt there was a connection there already and it felt right.  I new playing for the Israeli international side boosted my credentials but I also new walking in to a new team especially one as big as Racing would be no walk in the park.  im enjoying how my season has gone on so far and im enjoying the English way of football. who knows what the future has in store but hopefully if I can keep putting in 40 or even 50 yard shots the gaffer should be happy.  all I can do is try, the rest will tell the tail i guess.

OC: You've managed to make the left wing your own this term - do you feel you can do a job elsewhere on the pitch?

Well i'm trying my best and the best is all I can do.  I love the fact that im on the left coz i love attacking players and getting crosses in for the big men upfront.  having some1 like Clarke on the opposing wing is a boost for me coz ive never played in a team where some1 else can keep up with me.  so to know that if im on the ball i know he will be there like a mirror reflection on the other side.  on Sunday we took it in turns switching wings and it was showing to be a real threat to the opposition.  I feel comfortable on either wing to be fair so i guess id say the wing is my home. and its where I belong.  saying that I once played in the maccabi Jewish league upfront and scored a cheeky 6 goals in 1 season. not to mention a free kick from the half way line

OC: Having watched you on many occasions it's clear your first touch isn't the best - Other players would lose confidence if they were in the same position whereas you seem to use it to your advantage - What tips would you give to similar players who have touches like rapists?

All i can say is keep trying. head down and focus on other parts of the game. like shouting running and sometimes shooting from 40 yards.  if your touch is good then your obviously doing a good job. but if your touch is bad like mine then your do a better job.  5 glorious goals is what i have done so far.  imagine what is to come. i find playing football with a rugby balls helps your touch to be bad.

OC: You do a lot of work in Golders Green helping young Jewish drug users try to overcome their addictions - Being a successful GP recruitment officer, why do you feel the need for this extra curricular charity work?

if they can overcome the fact that drugs aren't an essential part of life that means there is time for improvement in other areas of there life. money is important but the person u are and what u wanna become is priceless.  having grown up in Jerusalem and seeing what drugs does to people i know how hard life can be.  im still suffering from after effects from the first drug i ever took. but i feel happy even though i am mad. but hey its the person i have become and the person im proud of.  lets hope i can turn more people into me.  thats why i do it!

OC: Your well known on the press circuit as Le Sulk. This is due to your reaction when you were rested for one half of a game - Do you feel this tag is unfair?

most definitely an unfair label for some1 else's words that were said that day.  every international player is used to taking there turn on the bench.  when it comes round u have to take it on the chin head up and focus on what your gonna do when your chance comes and u get on that pitch to prove your point.  as my best friend marshal would say aka Eminem  You better lose yourself in the moment you own it you better never let it go, oh You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to glow Cuz opportunity comes once in a lifetime.  i take these words on board every day .  it helps me get my game on.

OC: This season you've been an unexpected source of goals - what's the secret behind your incredible strike rate?

i believe there are two reasons. the first reason is because i think it has something to do with the dragons on my shinning boots. ive been criticised about the colour and the boots, but the player makes the boots and the boots make the player.  if people wnat to criticise me they can, its all good banter and as im unexpected to score so many goals on the pitch it compliments me as a person to prove that i can.  i also eat lots of honey aka Yad Mordechai.  its lovely.

(Editors Note: I have been editing Russell's writing for 20 minutes at this point. I have now decided to leave the rest unedited)

OC: Russell - You arrive at training and games with Dave Sack - It's also rumoured you went to see "Broke Back Mountain" together? Are the rumours of homosexuality being rife in the RCF dressing room true?

absolutly not.  just becasue dave went to see billy elliot doesnt meen it has to be rubbed off on me. his the fag , not me!!  there was talk however of my football team mate simon jewish as they come fields seen coming out of the muswell hill cinema late on friday night with a bagel in one hand ( Shock )  and a photo of the two gay farmers in the other.  Queation answered. next

OC: Who are the big characters in the Fantana dressing room?

well apart from myself , greek pete comes across as a joker aswell as pat butcher look alike big salmon.  all the boys crack me up to be honest and thats 1 of the reasons i love the club more then dizzy loves missing training.

OC Who do you room with on away trips?

apart from my right hand i guess any1 that wants to. im open for all offers.  look at my profile on the website to find out more about me.

OC: Can you talk us through the story behind the recent Daily Mirror headline "Leiter and Pedonomou in Vaseline Hell Raiser"

Yes not a problem oliver.  basically about 6 years ago i met pete through simon in his bat mobile.  we were on our way to a car parts place somewhere along the m25 i think to pick up something for petes sound system.when we arrived we noticed there was a sign in the garage saying Gaseline Shell fund raiser.  we checked it out to see what was happening and what it meant.  on closer inspection we realised that shell garage were having a fun raiser to try and raise money for a club known as Shannon.  we being regulars at the time took part.  basically u give them a tenner and they let u feel the car up fully.  all the petrol ( gaseline ) was free prity much for the day, and it only cost us a tenner. as a joke simon changed the sign from Gaseline Shell fund raiser to Leiter and pedonomou in vaseline hell raiser.  i guess its a funny joke gone wrong. no harm done

OC: Will you be required to have an arranged marriage?

fortunetly i have been bought up to love ham, bacon and the rest of some of the worlds finest food.  on this note i have learned to love the way of life. religion is what u want religion to be. if u believe in it then u must follow it. if you dont then u do what u feel is right. i am still in the process of thinking and as of yet i havent made my mind up so i would rather not comment.ohthough i would say if mrs parati wanted me id marry her no problem

OC: David "Doublepack" Day has said he is sick of the younger members of the first team squad copying his clothing style - Do you think the grandad cardigans you sport are a hit with the ladies?

you tell me

they love a grandad.

OC: I understand you practice martial arts - Can you talk us through the fundamental techniques of Origami?

Well i study hours on end like the young bruce lee and jacki chan did.  i fist took my inspiration from leonardo from the teenage mutant ninja turtles. he taught me so much and from that day i new what i wnated to do with myself.  I have been studying a form of martail arts called judi free stlye. my flexibilty and stamina has improved emensly and i love what im doing and where im heading.  im currently learning japanese aswel.  if any1 requires me to teach them moves i can.  dont be afraid of me just ask and i shall show u the way. wax on wax off

OC: What are your hopes for the remainder of the season?

i dont have hopes.  i have dreams. i want us to win everything and lose nothing. i want us to do the job on the pitch and have the banter and laughs at other times. i want what we all want, and thats racing club fantana to be the best that they can be.  if we stay focussed and keep the ball on the deck well be untouchable like GOD.
