SIOUXSIE and the BANSHEES – HISTORY

Here you will Find a Banshees/Creatures etc Full Discography

Siouxsie and the Banshees  /  Creatures  / The Glove  /  Others

History:

Formed: London, England ... September '76 by SIOUXSIE SIOUX and STEVE SEVERIN, both members of the infamous 'Bromley Contingent'

punk troupe who religiously followed The SEX PISTOLS during the turbulent early years of their career; an early incarnation of The BANSHEES even

featured future PISTOL, SID VICIOUS on drums, the outfit mangling the Lord's Prayer at the legendary 100 Club punk all-dayer in summer '76.

SIOUX gained further notoriety following her appearance (as a fan) on the fateful edition of Bill Grundy's 'Today' programme wherein his tete-a-tete

with the 'PISTOLS outraged the country's more upstanding citizens. Cutting a striking dash through the punk scene with her Nazi chic and proto-goth

garb, SIOUXSIE and her BANSHEES (who, after much to-ing and fro-ing, were eventually completed by JOHN McKAY and KENNY MORRIS) toured

constantly throughout 1977, eventually signing to To Polydor' the following year after their original label, 'Track', went bust. A debut single, 'HONG KONG

GARDEN' was a sprightly slice of oriental flavoured post-punk which hit London scene. 'THE SCREAM' (1978) was instantly hailed as a classic upon

its release a few months later, the record's queasy, churning goth-psychedelia breaking new ground and spearheading a new direction for many bands

inspired by a movement already dying on its feet. For many recent converts, then, 'JOIN HANDS' (1979) was a disappointment, a turgid affair which

lacked the bite of its predecessor and presaged a band breakdown; McKAY and MORRIS upped sticks and left mid-tour, ROBERT SMITH (The CURE)

briefly deputising before a new guitarist was eventually found in erstwhile MAGAZINE man, JOHN McGEOGH. The drum seat, meanwhile, was taken

by ex-SLITS man, BUDGIE, who would subsequently become SIOUXSIE's beau and eventual husband. The revamped line-up bounced back in 1980

with the enchanting 'HAPPY HOUSE' (a Top 20 hit that Spring) and an accompanying Top 5 album, 'KALEIDOSCOPE', investing their sound with

a newly acquired accessibility and ensuring a degree of crossover success for SIOUXSIE's icy sensuality. 'JU JU' (1981) further refined the group's subtle

gothic tapestries, again taking the band into the UK Top 10 and spawning a clutch of minor hits while 'ONCE UPON A TIME - THE SINGLES' neatly

rounded up the first instalment in The BANSHEES' career. More overtly experimental was the following year's 'A KISS IN THE DREAMHOUSE',

utilising strings and flirting with club sounds. 1983 saw a flurry of side project activity as SIOUXSIE and BUDGIE formed The CREATURES, releasing

'FEAST', the first of two albums together (they also had a major hit with Mel Torme's 'RIGHT NOW). SEVERIN, meanwhile, formed The GLOVE

with SMITH (who had also rejoined the BANSHEES ranks as a part-time, temporary replacement for the departing McGEOGH), releasing the 'BLUE

SUNSHINE' album the same year. No new BANSHEES material surfaced, although an atmospheric cover of The Beatles' 'DEAR PRUDENCE' hit No.3

and gave them their biggest selling single to date. The track featured on 1983's live set, 'NOCTURNE', while the following year's 'HYAENA, saw SMITH

making his presence felt over the course of a haunting set that was unfairly panned by the critics. With SMITH subsequently finding the demands of a

dual lifestyle too tiring, ex-CLOCKDVA man, JOHN CARRUTHERS was drafted in for 'TINDERBOX' (1986), an album which carried on in much the

same vein, spawning a sizeable hit with the infectious 'CITIES IN DUST'. Perhaps the band really were running out of ideas as their detractors suggested,

a suitably gothic Top 20 rendition of Bob Dylan's 'THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE' trailing a whole album's worth of competent but hardly inspiring cover

versions. Featuring yet another guitarist, JON KLEIN, 1988's 'PEEPSHOW was a much more compelling proposition, a perversely eclectic selection best

sampled on the mutant dancefloor hit, 'PEEK-A-BOO'. Now something of an alternative institution, SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES cruised into the 90's

with their most chart-friendly original material to date, the swooning 'KISS THEM FOR ME' (the band's first - and to date only - major US hit) single and

attendant 'SUPERSTITION' (1991) album. Despite the latter set's commercial and critical success, the group reached the end of its natural lifespan in the

mid-90's, bowing out on a high with the majestic 'THE RAPTURE'. Officially splitting in April '96, SIOUXSIE was working on new CREATURES material

with spouse BUDGIE, while SEVERIN scored the soundtrack for the movie, 'Visions Of Ecstasy'. The aforementioned CREATURES finally resurfaced

via 'ANIMA ANIMUS' (1999), an album that boasted a few minor hits; SIOUXSIE was now looking rather Elizabeth Taylor-ish although when

she wailed and her BUDGIE drummed it was safe there was no lasting comparison.
