UK-LRO

UK-LRO is an e-mail list-based group for Land Rover owners and enthusiasts in the UK that's been around since about 1995. It's actually administered by a guy called Bill Callocia in the States and is an off-shoot of an earlier LRO list that was intended for Stateside Land Rover owners. Although primarily intended for people based in the UK, there are quite a few members in other parts of the world, including a number of ex-pats. The list members are very grateful to Bill, who provides the necessary resources for the list to exist completely free of charge.

The group works by holding a list of all of the e-mail addresses of the people subscribed to it on a central server. Any message sent to the group e-mail address is automatically forwarded to all of the other addresses on the list so everybody sees every message.

Although people do come and go, there are one or two members that have been subscribed to the list since the very beginning. I, myself, have been subscribed since October 1999. Although the common connection is Land Rovers, the topics of conversation can be very wide ranging and the atmosphere has been described as akin to a virtual pub. Because of this, it's gained something of a reputation as the 'font of all knowledge'. It's rare that a question is asked that somebody on the list can't give an answer to.

CD on grill is a badge of recognition for fellow UK-LRO membersAlthough the idea has been copied by more recent web-based groups, it was UK-LRO members that first came up with the idea of fixing a CD to the front of their Land Rovers to serve as a suitably IT related badge of recognition. Because the membership is dispersed around the UK (and the rest of the world) and rarely meets face to face, it provides an easy way of spotting fellow members.

If you'd like to join UK-LRO, then click on the link on the left of this page and follow the instructions. Generally speaking, the list doesn't take life too seriously, so be sure to bring your sense of humour!
