Cleansers, well below you should be able to find some information on the product you use, make sure it is the correct one for your skin type.  Use the routine I gave you in cleansing.

What are cleansers used for?

They come in many forms:

Included in some of the ingredients for cleansers are water and oil.  Water – dissolving other substances, and oil – dissolving grease.

Water-in-oil (w/o) – minute droplets of water surrounded by oil.

Oil-in-water (o/w) – minute droplets of oil surrounded by water.

Normally mixing both substances together they will separate, so an emulsifier is added, this then stabilizes the mix to form an emulsion.  An emulsion is used in many products – cleansers.

A cleanser can be liquid to semi-solid depending on the water content.

CLEANSING MILKS:

They are usually (o/w) emulsions and a high water to oil proportion, this makes it more fluid.

Suitability – sensitive skin and dry skin prone to sensitivity, also younger skin as it contains less grease and is cool on application.  Would be drying on mature skin due to water content.

With sensitive skin try to avoid common allergen ingredients e.g. alcohol, mineral oil and lanolin.  Usually referred to as dermatologically tested or hypoallergenic.

CLEANSING LOTIONS:

Usually don’t contain oil, as they are solutions of detergents in water.  Unsuitable for removal of facial cosmetics.

Suitability – Normal to combination skin types.  Some cleansing lotions can be medicated - cause of the alcohol content this would be used for spotty, congested and oily skin.  But if the client has a normal, combination or mature skin type this form of cleansing lotion may not be effective due to the lack of oil in the contents.

CLEANSING CREAMS:

High proportion of oil-to-water, making the emulsion richer and thicker in consistency to milks. With the higher oil content it is easier to manipulate over the skin surface – causing less drag on the skin tissue.  Good for removal of facial cosmetics.

Suitability – Dry and mature skins, even useful for the deep cleansing massage.

CLEANSING BARS:

A milder alternative to normal soap, which can upset the natural PH balance of the skin.  Cleansing bars are specially formulated to match the skins PH balance, making it less likely to dry the skin.

Suitability – greasy to normal that is not sensitive, as this could leave the skin feeling taut, itchy and sensitive.  Also combination skin.   Good for the client who insists that they have to use a bar (soap) and water.  There are even medicated ones on the market now, which are good for blemished skins.

EYE MAKE-UP REMOVERS

They can contain oily and non-oily substances, either in a lotion or a gel.  Oily substances are better for removing waterproof products e.g. mascara, wax and oil based eye shadows.  Non-oily substances are more suitable for clients with sensitive skin around the eye area, also clients who war false lashes and contact lenses.

FACIAL FOAMING CLEANSERS:

Effective for the client who wishes to use water on the face.  Foaming cleansers contain mild detergents, when mixed with water foam.  Additional ingredients are added for different skin types.  Advise client if using oil based products to use a cleansing cream first before using foaming cleanser.

Suitability – most skin types except for sensitive and dry skin.  Medicated foams are also available for the spotty, congested and blemished skin.

LIQUEFYING CLEANSERS:

Doesn’t penetrate the skin, melts quickly on the skin.  Mainly oil content – removes make-up effectively and quickly.  Resembles petroleum jelly, though toning is required as with leave the skin greasy.

Suitability – dry, normal and combination skin types.
