Hypnotherapy can resolve a number of conditions including but not limited to: A phobia can be described as an irrational fear to a particular object that is out of all proportion to the threat that the object actually represents. For some the thought of boarding a plane will produce feelings of intense anxiety and the aim will be to avoid the situation at all costs. This prolongs the phobia as there is never the possibility of testing reality. Hypnotherapy uses the fact that anxiety and relaxation are incompatible and cannot exist together. Just as laughter will defuse anger so relaxation will overpower fear. During hypnosis images associated with the phobia, having previously been agreed with the client, are presented with suggestions for deep relaxation. In this way the habitual fear response is replaced with feelings of calmness and control. Many people use smoking to relax and unwind. In fact nicotine is a stimulant and increases both heart rate and blood pressure. It is only a means of distraction and poses considerable health risks. The good news is that on stopping smoking no traces of nicotine are left in the body after 48 hours. However what is left is a habit which is by definition unconscious and which has been reinforced often over many years. Associations will have been set up in the brain so that, for example, the end of a meal will always set up the expectation of a cigarette or going to the pub will mean a drink and a smoke. Hypnotherapy works with the individual by identifying the specific triggers that activate the habit. In the hypnotic state the unconscious part of the mind will accept new and positive suggestions to eradicate the habit for good. We often turn to food when upset or despondent or simply bored. The feelings of comfort that food can bring can turn into a habit that is difficult to break. Although we can be well aware that food is not being used to satisfy hunger the association between eating and feelings of security and nurture is strong. For some overeating may just have been a part of the family environment that has become ingrained as the norm. Whatever the reason being overweight is associated not only with health problems but causes considerable psychological distress with the individual often feeling that they are unable to manage or change the situation. Hypnotherapy addresses these unconscious elements and allows the individual to take back control of their eating habits and achieve the weight loss they desire. It is not surprising given the pace of life today that many of us suffer from feelings of stress and of being out of control. In such a state we become less efficient and everything requires more effort so compounding the problem. Being constantly stressed is debilitating and can result in a spiral of being stressed about being stressed. The state of deep relaxation experienced during hypnosis is incompatible with any feelings of anxiety or tension. Suggestions using calm and peaceful imagery allow the associated feelings to be experienced again whenever needed. Self hypnosis is of particular importance and always taught. It allows the individual to practice, reinforce and manage his own therapy. |
