Makaton Symbols -
Widgit sell Writing With Symbols 2000 with Widgit
Rebus and PCS Symbols, or
with Makaton Symbols. Writing with Symbols is also
available in several other languages.
Some Schools went through a period of time choosing a particular symbol set for use in the school, and rigidly sticking to it. Makaton used to be very popular because it fitted in with learning Makaton Sign Language, a specific subset of British Sign Language (BSL). However, the rebus symbol sets are far more extensive, and the PCS symbols have the advantage of colour which can help some pupils/students identify/code symbols easier. Now the coloured symbols seem more popular for younger learners, and probably have interest because of the colour. Coloured symbols may be more suitable for some people. As a general principle, schools should probably have a preferred set for general labelling and use. However, any individual pupil/student should be assessed for the most suitable symbols for personal communication needs.
