This review doesn't need writing. If you're looking at
a website that dabbles in hardcore and you don't know who the fucking
Horror are, then you're beyond help and should shoot yourself in the face
now. They're ex-Voorhees (heard of them?) with the singer from Imbalance
(if you've not heard of them, that's understandable though equally if
not more annoying) and play fucking great fast and shouty hardcore with
a distinct rock 'n' roll feel as you might expect from old men who've
been at it for years and should know better but luckily don't. Sweet.
War All The Time win it for me though. Whereas The Horror aren't averse
to chucking in the odd solo, have intros and outros and sometimes slip
in some singalong bits, WATT are the purest hardcore hit I've heard in
years. Stripped-down and to the fucking point, they really show how much
can be done with so few ingredients. So utterly simple, so brutally direct,
this is exactly what hardcore should be like. It's totally zen man. Plus
is there a song about Thatcher in there? Jesus. Further proof that no
one under the age of 30 (or should that be 40?!?!) should be in a band.

BOXED
IN - '2001 - 2005' Discography CD
37 slices
of pure fury, everything we ever recorded, all 4 black vinyl records -
the LP, 3 EP's, (the 1st ep is remastered) and compilation tracks, comes
with booklet with lyrics, explanations and other junk, 'this band was
made up of ex members of every band you saw in sweaty squats and pubs
around the UK over the last 2 decades . Ferocious stuff lies within, the
musical experience akin to being knocked about the face and neck with
a hammer, with depressing lyrics about the world going down the pan, -
utterly raging!
Here are some reviews:
LP:
High-powered hardcore from UK band Boxed In, Manic tirades with a whirlwind
of guitar/bass/drums clamor and vocals struggling to be heard over the
fray. Not too happy with the state of the worldToo Many Dead,
for instance, discusses the inevitable deaths of innocent civilians (aka
collateral damage) during warfare and thats certainly
been the case in Iraq, to name one recent conflict. Musically, inspired
by the likes of SIEGE and UK forebears HERESY, RIPCORD , etc. Almost all
fast n ripping, except for the closing track They Live Again"
played at a sturdy, heavy pace and the effect is crunching. Aural devastation.
(Suburban Voice)
1st EP:
'I saw these the other week and they blew my arse away! Boy, these are
fucking hardcore - hardcore as it used to be played in the 80's. No metal
/ grind or new school trollop what-so-ever, this is simply fast thrashing
in ya fuckin' face take no prisoners hardcorepunk. Bands like PANDEMONIUM,
HEIBEL, LARM, BGK and the best of the best 80's hardcore bands can eat
their hearts out, Boxed In are today's forerunners for 'real' hardcore!
My fave band to come from these shores in a fuckin' long time. (Hell and
Damnation)
2nd ep:
Fucking hell, this is simply amazing fast-as-fuck, pure and simple unadulterated
hardcore punk. Pissed as fuck, raw, blistering rage. Everything about
this record is simply perfect - the drums, the guitar tone, the lyrics,
the fucking Mellakka cover - fuck. Boxed In are a shining example of a
band learning from and combining the finer elements of classic bands like
Varukers, BGK, Ripcord and the like then taking it and creating something
totally fresh and powerful.(?)
3rd Ep:
'This ep is their most powerful and angriest to date, totally solid quality
non-stop fast 80s-style euro hardcore, everything is on eleven on these
seven songs.' (Flo)
This is the final release for Flat Earth Recs, with
help from Crime Scene, Fabric 77, Push Down and Turn.

PLEASANT
VALLEY CHILDREN - Discography CD
Awesome
damaged, Flag-influenced painjazzcore racket! everything we recorded on
one handy disc.
Incredible twisted mindfuck music, thats what Sam Mc Pheeters said anyway,
we need some review blurb here to let you know how good this is! "Out
of the barren wastelands of the late-80s/ early-90s, came PLEASANT VALLEY
CHILDREN, unique both sonically and lyrically, a warped collision between
early BLACK FLAG, early RUDIMENTARY PENI, and vintage BORN AGAINST. Included
are some great critical reflections on the world around us, which are just
as relevant now, as they were then. Youve got one chance, and one
chance only, to own everything this band ever did, or live in regret for
eternity."

JOHN
HOLMES 'El
Louso Suavo' LP
"
I'd heard JOHN HOLMES were pretty chaotic, but this is far from that, it's
just the heaviest fucking metal around. Sure, it has plenty of twists, off-kilter
inserts and even viciously funky bass runs, but at its core are just pure
metal roots that have mutated into an incredible pummeling sound, packed
with enough grooves and crushing power to floor you. The dual vocals alternately
growl and scream the bleakest of lyrics, soaked in a bitter negativity that
suit the sound of JOHN HOLMES to a tee.

KITO
- 'The
Long Player' LP
"Flat
Earth records have a reputation second to none where the provision of
quality hardcore is concerned, and Kito are among the finest outfits to
have risen in association with the label. Occupying the exact point where
anarcho punk meets sludgecore, Kito unleash an unshakable barrage of guitars
that pin you to the wall with the force of a 15 ton juggernaut. Rhythms
come doused in brutality, riffs are delivered straight from the gut, and
the whole thing is wrapped up so tightly it's a wonder the musicians aren't
starved of oxygen. All of which adds up to one potent slab of vinyl."
KERRANG
SOLANKI
- 'BUZZ OR
HOWL UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LEEDS 6' - 10"
"SOLANKI
are almost like a homage to the MINUTEMEN, and the fact that they've been
able to pull it off with ease is high praise in itself. Spread across
these 10 inches is 13 tracks of incredibly tight and jazzy punk, sitting
squarely in D.Boon territory and it's just awesome! Haring along at a
crazy pace, tight and controlled, yet chaotic and flowing at the same
time. Remember when you first heard the MINUTEMEN's "Double Nickles on
the Dime"? Buy this and relive that moment. Just fucking great! "

BLUE = NEW!

ATOMGEVITTER
/ EASPA MEASA (SCO / IRE) dead good of course!
DEAD IN THE WATER (FIN) Crushing hardcore from Finland that appears
to take influence from bands like Tragedy, except they have a bit more
of a grind element in their music. Loud sweeping guitars, pounding drums
and low guttural vocals. The pace of the music varies some, with a few
fast energetic moments. But most of it is slowed down heavy stuff. This
is dark and brutal, Loose comparisons to His Hero is Gone are unavoidable
FAREWELL TO ARMS - 'A Watered
Down Version of Everything' (UK) 10 storming tracks
GIVE UP ALL HOPE (UK) international crust punk based in london, ex boxed
in and nailbiter amongst others..
IMPERIAL LEATHER - 'Antibodies' EP - Four new songs
with the new and improved Imperial Leather line-up, playing their hallmark
style of rip-roaring punk rock'n'roll that's catchy as all hell.
KARMA PAYMENT PLAN / TRIAC (U.S)
K P P - jumping from hardcore/punk to straight grind to dissonant
metal and hints at chaotic metalcore. Triac are vicious grindcore with
forceful tempo changes that are really intense and dynamic. The recording
is even heavier here than it was on their split with Medic.
KONTORTION - 'Breed into nothing' (U.S) Slap a Ham style HC, Metallic
guitars paired with gut wrenching screams.
SHUT THE FUCK UP / THE RATS
(GER / SWE)
SODOMIZED BY MARCIA BRADY (U.S)
Eight brutal songs from this mysterious new Florida hardcore powerhouse.
Song titles include "No Butt Lube For You" and "George
Bush's Daughters Need Discipline." 100% HARDCORE! NOT FOR WIMPS!
WAR ALL THE TIME / WHOLE IN THE HEAD (UK)
North East meets South Coast. Nine blast of furious UK hardcore punk.
Featuring ex members of Kito, Boxed In, Health Hazard, Minute Manifesto,
Haywire, No Substance and Sawn Off amongst others. This Rips from start
to finish and is a worthy addition to your shoe box.

folk
HIGHSCORE (GER) if you like your youth crew fast and energetic,
you'll love HIGHSCORE. They play HC not unlike the Crucial Response style
bands, but a shitload faster
INNOXIA
CORPORA - ' Kcertu'(CZ) high energy hardcore punk, fucking great band
who have their own unique style
MIGRA VIOLENTA - 'Holocausto Capitalista' (ARGENTINA)
Migra Violenta sounds more brutal and fast than ever, there's even a slight
touch of crust on some titles. Migra Violenta hates capitalism, the mass-murder
of the world, and there's no doubt about that when you hear them. this
is breakneck hardcore in a style that falls somewhere between Dropdead
and Los Crudos. the lyrics are extremely political and bluntly to the
point (English translations are provided) and are screamed with the utmost
of urgency. This is cutting edge, pissed-off, punk rock that certainly
pushed the boundaries in more ways than one!
MURDER
SUICIDE PACT (U.S) straight up obnoxious hardcore - ex FAILURE FACE
OROKU (U.S) Goddamn, OROKU really brings
it with some crushing metallic crust. It alternately reminds me of WAKE
UP ON FIRE and NEUROSIS. There are also these slow dark spaces within
this record where it is mostly cello and its really beautiful and
haunting, a little bit like OPETH. The overall political sentiment of
the record can be summed up by a few choice song titles, Disgust
for Mankind, Meaningless, Terror, and The
End is Near. This is exactly the metal I want right now: its
heavy, its dark and its punk. Fuck Yeah.
ANIHILATED 'Path to Destruction'
(UK) japan reissue of 80's UK crossover raw thrash, cover art my Mid,
remastered with extra earlier demo and live tracks.
ARMY
OF FLYING ROBOTS - 'Life is Cheap' (UK) This is the brand new album from
one of the best thrash hardcore bands in the UK! Super-fast drumming,
harsh atonal riffs and deadly screams!
ASS -'Sink' CD EP (£3ppd) Five new tracks from the the snottiest
DIY punk band in Minneapolis, whose message screams to be proud to be
different, proud to Queer and be proud of non-conformist. Musically they
play raw punk rock that would have fit in well with early 90's East Bay
bands such as BLATZ and FILTH, playing rousing scream-along anthems. Four
of the songs are originals, while the final song is an appropriate cover
of FAGGATRON's classic Ass-Kick-a-Tron.
A WARM
GUN - 'panic in the face of time (U.S) Baltimore, MD's mad thrashers
coming at you with 13 tracks of brutal, pounding hardcorepunk.
BLACK HAND, THE - 'War monger' (CAN) cover art by Away (Voivod)
BLACK UNIFORMS - 'Splatter Punx on Acid' (SWE)
Classic Swedish Hardcore / Punk, with members of Moderat Likvidation,
Anti Cimex, The Perukers, and Driller Killer! This is a compilation of
the band's Back from the Grave (1986) and Horror Holocaust (1987) demos,
plus many rare and previously unreleased tracks, and most of the songs
from the Faces of Death" album (1989).
BRAIN
RESIN - 'Unreality Remains' (AUSTRALIA) This is like a strange collision
of GRIEF, ISIS and THE SWING KIDS!! It wanders all over the place and
occasionally touches base with some metal sensibilities, but the off-the-wall
fumblings and guitar twiddles are what makes it so cool. Its refreshing
to hear a band explore their instuments like this and spread out a bit
rather than confining their songs to two minute blasts of chaos check
it out if you dont mind your hardcore wandering off from the rulebook.
DEATHSKULLS - 'The Real Deal'
(UK) Poison Idea meets Negative approach in Essex.
DRUGS
OF FAITH (U.S)the power trio that is Drugs Of Faith breaks out with
their debut official release, founded by an Enemy Soil original member,
bashes through its hardcore rock fused with grindcore songs utilizing
dissonant chords and opposition bass, frontal attack drums, and lyrics
covering the personal as well as the political landscape brought out by
dynamic vocals. Focused yet a challenge to categorize, Drugs Of Faith
carpet bombs the listener with its innovative, stylistic mix. Mastered
by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer / Agoraphobic Nosebleed) at Visceral Sound.
FUCKING CHAMPS, THE - '3' (U.S) the champs are awesome, no discussion,
and this is their best album in my humble opinion.
GERIATRIC UNIT -Nuclear Accidents
(UK) Old Fast Loud Rules! GU feature former members of Heresy, Iron
Monkey and Hard to Swallow and play hardcore punk. This is not some nod
to the eighties inspired rehash, these guys fucking invented it! Raw,
Real, and the antidote to all the drivel youve had to endure thats
been masquerading as hardcore in recent years.
HELLCHILD
- 'Bareskin' (JAP) second album from the kings of groove-grind, unbelievebly
underrated! the deep growls are unique and powerful and the lyrics are
thoughtful rather than gored over. Kreator, Napalm Death and Disassociate,
metallic riffage to sample induced mayhem.
HELLCHILD - 'Circulating Contradiction' (JAP) Japans gods
of moshing Thrash/Violence, 10 bombs up your ass. A must
HEY COLOSSUS - 'II' (UK) Opener 'Red Giant' swaggers along (mostly
on one chord) with the force of a herd of mastodon, while 'Vengeance'
is a spiteful, jagged slice of sludge-hardcore issued from the same vein
as Unsane. But it's not all bulky jams, 'Take It' is more of a post-hardcore
experiment that seems slightly out of place next to the valve amp reverberations
of 'Europa'
HIPPIES OF TODAY (FRA) - fast hardcore mixed
with grind, crust, punk and metal influencies which was recorded very
well with ex-Soar and Season people. One of the best french bands.
INSTITUTE - '2 Shadows' (U.S) YES we love this release! isn´t
crust or fast hc - is more like NEUROSIS sound... you like Neurosis -
you´ll love them. for us is this total apocalyptic sound. feat.
ex.DAMAD.
KEITZER -'suicide anthology' (GER) fucking hell, the CD rocks!
if you like Mörser or Systral from Germany, check KEITZER out, they
want rock you!
KRUPSKAYA - 'Clouds over Pripyat' (UK) Krupskaya
play an extremely unique blend of violent grindcore with experimental,
hardcore and noise influences. They are unique to the point that its almost
impossible to associate their sound with any preceding band or
to identify any major musical influences. Songs are structured in an absolutely
erratic fashion filled with noisy guitar riffs, pounding double
kicks and sporadic blast beats, with vocals constantly screaming in the
background in an insane torrent of total fucking chaos.
MIND POLLUTION (POL) dark, heavy and slow crust punk, like old
Neurosis, nice lookin digipack.
POOCHLATZ 'victims of self preservation' (ISRAEL) Ambient / Experimental
/ Industrial like prurient/ wolf eyes
POUNDAFLESH - "Manifesto" (UK)
a healthy dose of kinda simple, but always swift, straightforward and
entirely urgent, wholly pissed off hardcorepunk which consists of a gruff
singer who spits out gallons of venomous poison.
PROCESS, THE - "The Kennedy Sessions"
(SCO) - Former/current members of In
Decades Decline, Shank, Scatha & Atomgevitter, among others. Stripped
down, to the point heavy hardcore, drawing influences from Ringworm, early
Integrity, Damnation AD and Cursed.
RECHARGE - 'Menschen, Hass, Vernichtung' (GER) its
the german discharge!
SELFISH - 'Cry for Love, Cry for Death - the
EP's' (FIN) This is a collection of remastered tracks from some of
this Finnish hardcore band's out of print vinyl material as well as some
compilation tracks. These guys make no effort to hide their love of Japanese
hardcore, and that admiration definitely shows through in their own sound,
though to me they definitely don't sound like a copy of any of the Japanese
bands that I've heard. It's a good mix of the straight Discharge sound
and the blazing solos of the Japanese spectrum, but there are some creative
riffs in between as well.
SPAZM 151 (U.S) These Texans blaze through
13 tracks of fucking classic hardcore/punk in barely over 20 minutes with
tons of energy and a great multi vocal attack. The songs are the perfect
blend of pissed off hardcore and punk rock as well, taking the attitude
and slight catchiness of the latter and blending it with the pure aggression
and speed of the former. There's even a thrashy crossover feel in a couple
of the tracks. Plus there are some totally reckless lead breaks to boot.
You can't lose! They even close out with two raging covers: "Build
Me a Bomb" by Jerry's Kids and "I Hate Myself" by The Offenders.
UNSUNG - 'Nail in the Hand of Christ' (ITA) One group that does
not stop when faced with bariere taxes of musical genres. Looking for
something to say while moving up purely territories and heavy metal. Slowdowns
abrupt and sudden accelerations, moshate fears and grindate With all the
words intelligent and personal. These are but only three percent make
it! political words singed on earthquake of mosh/grind/heavy music! very
heavy suond (wall of noise!)
ZEROID - '2001 - 2002' (GER) From the ashes
of Jeniger, Akephal and Asmodinas Leichenhaus comes this hamburg based
bunch of crazy noise merchants. This was their first release, killer sound,
heavy, intense and chaotic hardcore with a dark and gloomy feeling that
absolutely doesn*t fit into the easy listening file. Fuck
the clichés here are Zeroid. Packed in special heavyweight artwork.
The second release from these brutal noise merchants. 8 killer HC songs
in midtempo mayhem. Dark, hypnotic music which reminds of Uranus, Damad
or Neurosis.Rough but fat production that pushes the stunning grooves
and melancholic melodies that shine through here and there.
V/A - Gaidhlig Na Lasair' - 15 song 4 way split CD of underground music
all sung in scots gaelic, exclusive tracks from OI POLLOI, MILL A H-UILE
RUD, ATOMGEVITTER and NAD ASLINGEAN
CABARET NOCTURNO VOL3 : Mainly finnish bands of an oddball persuasion:

CHELYABINSK 40, ASTRO CAN CARAVAN, CAUSE FOR EFFECT, MANIFESTO JUKEBOX
and more from elsewhere (BOXED IN / SABOT / ZU)
