Great quantities of bricks were ordered to build a strong retaining wall, because, in common with so many other Staithes buildings, the chapel was edged onto a terrace of land, won from the cliff side. The bricks - twenty thousand seven hundred and fifty, at twenty seven shillings per hundred, were delivered to Staithes, after arriving at Loftus, the nearest station, where they were housed in the depot of Charles Mark Palmer's Easington estate, to await collection. Several houses in Staithes, some in the main street, were built of white bricks said to have been brought back as ballast from Aberdeen, by yawls returning from the fishing grounds.
It would seem, in the days before 1883, when the railway finally reached Staithes, that a relatively easy means of transport was by sea and there were stories of stone being moved in small quantities by coble from Sheepstones and shipped to Staithes, where it was prepared for use by stone masons. Recorded in an account that Addison Brown had with Mary Lamplough, the landlady of the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, was mention of building materials, transported by sea possibly intended for the new villa, which could have been the property, latterly occupied by the Puckett family at Mount Pleasant.

John Williamson, His book,
God gave him grace on it to look,
That he may run a happy race,
