FOX INN 74 Ridge Hill Lane
In 1836 John Norton left the Star Inn, Cocker Hill, and took the presumably newly- opened Fox Inn on Ridge Hill Lane. The pub was then near a collection of cottages known as Higher Fold, and some of this old property survived into the twentieth century.
In April 1869 John's successor, Ephraim Norton, was fined 10/6d plus costs for serving two men during prohibited hours. When the police called, Ephraim was seen hastily taking two jugs of beer upstairs. There were two men in a downstairs room with empty glasses in front of them. In his defence, Ephraim said he had served them because they were travellers on their way to Saddleworth!
The Norton family kept the Fox Inn until 1911. William Harrison was the owner in 1890, and his executors sold the Fox to Rothwell's Brewery of Newton Heath some time after 1922. When Rothwell's rebuilt the pub some terraced property on Hanover Street was re-fronted and joined to the pub by a single-storey building between the two. Most unusual!
The present owners of the Fox Inn, Marston, Thompson and Evershed, acquired Rothwell's and its licensed houses in 1961.
