According to my mother, great aunt Martha never spoke about her father much, she would have only been 7 when he died, but she did always say he was a foundling. But if this is true why would the Parish Record show he was baptised to Betsy Hitchen.1841 Census

FOUND IN CANAL
WEAVERS SUICIDE AFTER NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
SISTERS SAD STORY
Mr. G. S. Lereache? (county coroner) held an inquest at the Carnegie Library Failsworth this (Thursday) morning on the body of Eliza Hitchen (49), weaver, which was recovered from the Great Central Canal near the Mersey Mill, Failsworth, on Tuesday last. Martha H. Hitchen, spinster, a weaver, said that the deceased was her sister and resided with her at 24 Byron St., Hollinwood. Deceased was in poor health for some months, being depressed. She had been under Dr. A. Smith of Hollinwood for a nervous breakdown since the middle of July. Deceased attended to her work till Saturday noon and on Monday morning she went out of the house at 9-30 am. to go an errand but did not return. Witness was informed by the police that deceased1s body had been pulled out of the canal. Deceased had no money trouble that she knew of. She thought deceased must have gone in the water on the impulse of the moment as they were very comfortable together.
Joseph Howard Licensee of the Bay Horse Inn, Cutler Hill, Woodhouses stated that about 1-15 am on Tuesday he was informed that there was a basket on a rail in the bridge bottom. He went to the place taking a clothes prop with him and saw something black on the water. He then placed the prop in the water and found the body of the deceased which was fully dressed. The body was put on the bank and he sent a man for the police. He thought the basket had been put there deliberately.
D. McGloin police officer stationed at Failsworth said that at 11 - 15 am on Tuesday he received information that there was a body on the towing path of the Great Central Canal bank. On arriving there he saw the basket in the hedge. He afterwards took the body to the mortuary and examining it found no marks of violence or of a struggle on the footpath.
Sergeant E. C. Porter Of Failsworth stated that he saw Dr. Smith of Hollinwood and told him what had occurred. Dr. Smith had been attending the deceased for a nervous breakdown for some months and he thought deceased was on the border of insanity. Witness said he had been informed that an older sister of deceased had died last August in Prestwich Asylum.
The Coroner said that by the evidence, deceased had taken her own life. She had taken the opportunity of going on an errand and on the impulse had gone into the water and drowned herself. The only verdict was that she committed suicide while her mind was unbalanced.M vi Edward HITCHEN was born on 17 Oct 1874. He died on 30 Jul 1945.
