1940 John Crooks Smith was evacuated from Dunkirk.Dunkirk (Fr. Dunkerque), town in northern France, in the Nord Department, on the Straits of Dover near Calais. In World War II, between May 24 and June 6 1940, Dunkirk was the site of one of the great military crises of history when more than 335,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated in an emergency by naval vessels and small civilian craft, when the Germans broke through to the Channel ports. It was orchestrated by Vice Admiral B. H. Ramsay, flag officer, Dover, and began with the slim hope of saving the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied forces from capture before the whole coastal area was overrun by the enemy. Forty-one destroyers, together with loops, minesweepers, transport and patrol craft, were hastily assembled at Dover, assisted by an assorted fleet of pleasure craft and fishing boats. British and French units fought a tenacious rearguard action to hold a perimeter around Dunkirk as soldiers queued to be taken off the jetties and beaches under continuous shore-based shelling and air attack.

Horses and cards have always figured in John's life. He was a and prolific gambler. When living in Hollins road, along with his brother Ernest would be involved in many games of cards in the local pubs. After marriage his local pub was the Old Post Office, in Hollinwood, where many a pound was won and lost, both at cards and on the horses. His other love at this time was snooker. A very good amateur player, his poor eyesight was always a detriment to his game. He took up refereeing the game and was the first qualified referee from Oldham.
Although not a sportsman himself he loved all kinds of sport, in the forties and fifties he would go to watch all Oldham Rugby League's matches, travelling all over the North West. When he moved to Farm Road, after about 12 months he took up an unlikely hobby for those who knew him! He turned to gardening. It became with him an obsession, but also brought him very close to his sister Dora who was also a very keen gardener. This friendship blossomed and in his sixties John went back to his first love cards, he learned to play bridge. Again bridge like his gardening became an obsession. He played in the early years with his son Roy as his partner. This usually involved playing against Dora and Bernard. He also played competitive bridge at local bridge clubs.
