Newbie Guide

What is the 'Warriors Guild'?

Well, the warriors guild is simply a group of people with a similar idea of how you play Discworld. In the Warriors Guild you are taught the simple, yet satisfying, art of killing things as fast as possible using physical attacks.
Of course, there are various guilds for you to join, but why would you want to? The Warriors guild is simply the best, and has the added edge of being nice and easy.

There is a guild in each of the major towns, Ankh-Morpork (AM), Khot-Lip-Khin (KLK), and Bes Pelargic (BP). There are also a number of guilds in various places around the disc for you to find.

Okay, I'm a warrior... what now?

Well, you have to make experience points (XP, or exp) and money so that you can advance your skills. To begin with you wont even have enough skills to kill a cockroach, which is why you really need to spend as long as you can stand in the newbie areas combat room. If you didn't do this then you are at a serious disadvantage. You can get a maximum of 5 levels of dodge and parry, as well as 5 levels of each skill your weapon uses... That will be enough to start with. Just.

If you take my advice (and why are you reading this if you're not at least a little interested?) then you'll pump all of your initial xp into the melee skill your weapon uses, and parry.melee. This will mean you can slowly take on harder and harder non player characters (NPCs). There will come a point where you can't take on the next NPC because you can't deal it enough damage, which is when you'll need to advance fighting.combat.special.weapon so you can get special attacks, such as bash, and slice.

It is also essential that you guild max (advance to the maximum the guild will allow) other.health as soon as possible. This will cost you in the region of 40k xp, but will normally double your hit points (hps or hp), and allow you to survive a lot longer against NPCs.

To get money you can use the search and sell method: Walk one room and search. This will normally turn up something which is useless to you, but worth money when taken to a general store. A word of advice though, there are few general stores, and anything with a 'backwards' or 'bw' exit is a player shop, not a general store. Player shops don't normally buy junk, which is all you'll find with your searching, and they tend to get a little annoyed if you try and sell your searched up things to them.

A good way to make xp is to find a few other players and make a group, or find a group already running (using the 'groups' command) and ask if they would mind you joining. The second isn't really a good option until you have something to offer the group, which as a warrior is likely to be no nonsense attack force. Most people wont want a newbie in their group, as they will have to protect and take on weaker NPCs for less xp.

What should I wear? What weapon should I hold?!?

You need armour, as you will probably rely on that once your parry is breached. There are a lot of good sites on armour, with different combinations of what is best. I find using the 'coverage' command very useful, and when deciding what I need next, the 'coverage unprotected' command. Once you are covered from head to toe, look for armour which stacks, allowing for added protection to certain areas.

When it comes to what you should hold I stand by my shield. No matter what else I'm holding, my shield is always there. The shield will allow you to parry almost any weapon, as weight isn't an issue, and it counts as armour as well. I carry my shield in my right hand, and a weapon in my left. To make this work to the full extent that is possible you need to setup your combat options, with the command 'options combat tactics attack=left' and 'options combat tactics parry=right'. With that setup you'll always use the shield to parry, and your weapon to attack.

What sort of weapon? Well how do you want to play? Personally I love the behead command, so I use swords and advance sharp and pierce to be able to use them well. I still need a base amount of blunt so I can kill trolls and yetis, but my main skill is sharp.

People keep asking me if I have bought any tea yet...

No, this isn't some sort of joke, the disc has what's called healing tea, which is made by members of the Witches Guild. Healing tea can be found in most player shops, along with a 'bwb' (brewed with bonus) number. The higher the bwb number, the better the tea, and the more hps it will return from drinking it. At the moment you probably don't have many hps so you wont need a very high bwb tea. Try to get the best you can afford without bankrupting yourself.

To use tea you need the bottle in your inventory. You then type 'drink 1/100 of bottle'. If you are very hurt you might need more than 1/100, but that is the normal amount to use early on. If you find that your tea isn't healing enough hps from 1/100, then you might need more anyway. I've had tea where I needed 5/100 for it to even do noticeable healing.

Right, I've got some levels, I'm killing stuff quite well... what now?

What do you mean? This is the main part of the 'game'... you could think about talking to people, getting to know a few of them, make friends, expand your social circle to include people from far off places. Or you could just keep farming the NPCs to make a ton of xp.

There isn't any 'point' to the game, there's nothing which you can do and say "Yes! I won!" (apart from typing 'win'...). That is the beauty of the disc, there is always something to do, and the only time you can get bored is when you're past wanting to look for them.

A few ideas about what to do next include:

Almost anything you've seen other guilds doing can at least be attempted so long as it isn't a guild only ability. The only restriction is the amount of xp you can get from farming NPCs, which for a warrior isn't normally very difficult.
