To get 'better' at the game you need to advance your skills (find out your skills by typing skills). To advance your skills you need experience points (you can either use score brief or score to find out your current experience points) to spend on the various skills.
Various activities in the game will give you experience such as using commands (find your list of commands with commands, hint newbie and rearrange don't give experience), and killing Non-Player Characters (or NPCs for short).
How much experience an NPC gives is dependant on many factors, but the most important factor is how difficult that NPC is to fight. More difficult NPCs pose a greater risk and so give more reward. It is advisable when you come across an NPC for the first time, and you want to kill that NPC, that you use the consider command which will give you a hint about how hard the fight might be.
To begin with you will only be able to kill rats, cockroaches, chipmunks and other small animals, but as you advance you will find you're able to kill more and get more experience.
If you can find one, join a group. Groups are temporary collections of players who band together to go hunting for experience. Being part of a group will will allow you to make friends with other people and get experience at the same time while (hopefully) being protected by people who are more skilled than yourself. You can use groups to get a full list of groups running and you can send a tell to the group leader to ask if you can join, remember to add where you are so they can, if they want to, find you and pick you up. Be aware that many groups are private and don't want extra members, it doesn't hurt to ask but expect quite a few rejections before you find a group which will accept you.
Taking a look at syntax group will show you that there are many things you can do while in a group, the most common of which will be group say and group emote. You can make life a little easier on yourself by using alias to reduce the amount of typing you need to do. I personally prefer alias gs group say and alias ge group emote and then I simply use gs Hello all! or ge runs around in circles..
Using info in an advancement room will give you the costs of the primaries you can currently advance. Remember that in order to advance, for example, fighting.melee you must first have 5 levels of fighting and to advance fighting.melee.swords you will need 10 levels of fighting.melee. This applies to almost all of the skill trees except for crafts and other.
The different options for advance are good for different circumstances. For example, if you have saved up a load of experience and you want to put it all into magic.spells.offensive you could type advance ma.sp.of to 300 as this will put all available experience into magic.spells.offensive up to guild max.
