WinMX is a lot like a perfect capitalistic society. The rich will get richer, but the poor will not get poorer (unless
compared to the rich of course). If you have a lot of files you will get a lot more.
If you want good stuff you must share good stuff.

- Be patient, stay connected 24/7.
- Consider a primary connection if you switch hosts and downloads time out.
- Use Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating systems.
- Defragment your disks and scan for errors.
- Turn off write cache on disks with shared folders.
- Use chat rooms to reconnect to other users if disconnected.

How to collect files:
====================
Focus on one file category only. If you want music / mp3 then you should share music. If you want movie clips then share movie clips.
Share complete movies if you want to download complete movies. If you want a special kind of movies then
share the same kind.

How to get a lot of movies:
==========================
- Trade movies with other users.
- Leech movies.
- Get movies from other online sources.
- Rip movies that you buy or rent.

How to trade movies:
===================
Establish a relationship of some kind to the user you want to trade with.
Make use of Chat rooms that have in the Topic the kind of file that you after.
Browse the user and look for partially downloaded movies that you can help complete.
See what the user is collecting, and offer something that will add to that collection.

How to leech movies:
===================
Search for movies that a lot of other users have and wait in queue until you get started.
The more users that have it the better are your chances to reach the top of the queue and get
it without having to trade.
Be patient, and do not be greedy if you want to leech only.
Enter a queue for 1-2 complete movies only.
Don't send messages requesting to be started.
If you must Leech then run as Primary to support the WinMX community which is supporting you
(I personally Hate leeches and they will not get started and will be ignored on entering my queues)

0075 Difficulties finding Favorite Chat room on channel list

Solution for :- WinMX 3.53 or better
When your unable to find your favorite chat room on WinMX, you can get the channel name from an alternative web site
goto this site and find your Channel you wish to goto

Select WEB MX Chat and wait for the browse to fill with the channel list.
Once found, right click the room name and copy short cut then goto to WinMX channel filter and paste link.
In the channel filter this will appear

all the characters on the left upto and including the first "=" must be deleted to make this link identical for entrance to the room

Before entering a room Always check your shared file list that it is acceptable to what the topic requires for the room.
Once inside a room browse yourself and leave it open as this browse will indicate to you if you are doing any repeat downloads.
if you're downloading something you already have then it will be highlighted.
This is particularly useful when the same file is out there under different names.

0375 Fixing a File Mismatch 004

This error can occur due to 1 of 3 reasons
1 - Error was downloaded from a corrupted incomplete
2 - Your PC crashed during that files transference
3 - The HDD that you was Downloading onto became full during file transfer

    To correct this Error

A - Open a browse on all sources for the file (wait for each to finish loading there browse so you can retain all que positions)
B - Cancel the file of all sources
C - Right click file then select Trim 10 k
D - You MUST always Clear file (if you do not file.. completion time errors can occur)
E - Reselect the file from each Browse you opened with the file
      if this procedure is done quick enough you will retain your pervious Queue position.
     if you have no source on it press Clear/Load Incomplete & reset AFS & AEQ

Due to the varying degree of corruption a 10k trim does not always work
I normally use another file trimmer rather than the WinMX trimmer & take a 5mb cut

0400 Solution to file Negotiation Error

Hold the file in queue for 10-15 minutes.
Do not trim unless you get mismatch error 04 when it does eventually resume.

0425 Connection transfer problems

Symptom :- Transfers going straight to disconnect while the Host sharer is at
waiting for connection and eventually times out
Solution :- Require the file and Leave in queue for 1 minute before starting
if that fails 1 or both of you may need to refresh your connection

0450 How to manipulate your browse on people

on the top of each browse in win is a line that contains ;- File, bytes, time, etc
by clicking on these the browse will sorted by the selection made, ascending 1st
clicking again on the same will resort descending

0475 How to add different file formats to your shared

With any WinMX prior to 3.54 the procedure is click shared/ shared file types
then on the bottom box add the file extender (this is the last 3/4 letters after the full stop on the file name)
then refresh files..

With WinMX 3.54 press setting/ library/ new then
type a name & enclose in brackets the extender and include the .full stop
EG.... Excel(.xls)

once done, you then must go to the folder and right click then select file types then the file type you wish to add

0500 You have appeared in your own Up Load Queue

What this means is that you have started a down load of a file that you have already...
Simply find the file in your Down load transfer window and right click then delete....
To see if you have more, on entering a chat room open a browse on your self an keep open ...
when you browse your self any thing highlighted is a repeat download,
select it then look for your name in your down load transfer window and delete from within winmx.

0525 XP Registry Fix

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Classes/CLSID/{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}/InProcServer32

This registry will cause problems in explorer, winmx & video playback.
To Fix :-

A - Start / Run type in "regedit"
Regedit is made up of 2 panel ... on the left is a registry tree
Using the registry tree, expand out the locations by pressing the + symbol at the beginning
B - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/
C - SOFTWARE/
D - Classes/
E - CLSID/ this location is there but you Must scroll down the tree past all that start with .full stop (Press C)
F - {87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}/
G - InProcServer32
If you have 2 entries on the right hand panel then you need to delete 1
H - delete the none default one so you are left with (Default) REG_EXPAND_SZ Etc....
I - close regedit

0575 MxMonitor settings (that need disabling to prevent ignoring friends)

On the Whois page
Disable (uncheck) Ignore when time out
Disable (uncheck) Ignore & clear by transfer status
(this setting although seems useful should have been designed with each connection type)

MxMonitor needs to be Manually closed for any settings to be remembered
(shutting down PC with out closing MxMonitor will result in all changes being lost)

0600 MxMonitor and memory problem associated (software solution)

When running MxMonitor eventually it will crash your PC due Bad memory stacking, it can be cured by 1 of 2 methods
1. you can run a free ram utility that runs in the back ground clearing memory ( I Use FreeRAM XP Pro v1.52 )
2 you can disable the whois feature (on whois page, uncheck Get user information automatically)
in removing this feature it will disable the leech protection that MxMonitor offers
3 Another trick for XP user to conserve memory usage is to switch to Windows Classic Style under the appearance Tab from display properties

0625 Best configuration for Winmx to be able to trade with all

when on the internet a Firewall is always advised to be in place and used
if you are running on XP you should obtain a software firewall & then disable the XP firewall
(XP firewall is not an effective firewall but more a P2P block & all the serious hackers can bypass it)
I suggest these steps so your ISP will not know you are using WinMX.
I recommend using different ports TCP 19570 UDP 13586 and change preferred peer cache away from your own region.
These numbers can be any number preferrably greater than 5000 as this will avoid any system usage ports

0750 How to save your hotlist when you need to reboot

Before you reboot add all your users you want to your ignored list
Because when you reboot your ignore list stays intact. Then when you reboot
Click on your ignored list there is the names you wanted to keep. Right click on
the name you want to keep. Now click on whois and it will say in the right hand
corner ADD TO HOTLIST. Click on that and they will be back in your hotlist.
Then go back to ignored file and remove them so you can keep on shareing.

If you are running XP the default shared folder is in your document setting folder and reveals your name.
By Browsing yourself & selecting "Show Full Path" you will see that your name is revealed
To prevent this create a new folder in your root directory [C:New Folder] and move all your complete shared into it,
You then need to add the new folder to your shared/library & remove the old folder from it.

The art of getting a PM through is do a whois
If you get a good whois then you know the PM will get through
if the target user is browsing then the PM will get through
but you will get a response to say "No response from user" as the receive signal timed out.
If you press the close (X symbol) button on the PM send box as soon as you send it,
then "No response from user" box will not appear on that message if it times out.

Out of disk space? Try MX File Ghoster. Can be obtained from http://web.tiscali.it/ringlord/
This tool lets you select some of your files and create a small text file for each of them.
The name of the text file is a combination of information like Original filename,
original file size and so on. The text file can contain a custom message with a description of the original file.
Once you create 'Ghost' files you can burn your originals on cd and delete them from your hard disk.
Users that browse your shared list will see these ghost files and can ask you to put back online the file they are interested in.

Failure to read the Users rules that are generally displayed in their browse in some form
Be greedy and enter a queue for too many files.
Be rude or complain a lot if your own system fails and you get disconnected.
Ask other users to trade without offering anything of value.
Cancel other users who have waited patiently in your queue to download from you.
Ask for complete movies when you only share incomplete clips or music.

If you are ignored the user will not see your private messages
or text you write in chat rooms. You will not be able to enter that users queue.
