Festivals & Slams

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 1989 & 1990
As part of Lancaster University Revue group Helên was involved in taking shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1989 & 1990. For some reason the 1990 show, 'The Friends of Sheepey Sheep', required the production of a life sized paper-mâché sheep. Helên was happy to oblige. The sheep caused quite a stir on the streets of Edinburgh and even appeared very briefly on BBC2's 'Edinburgh Nights'.

As well as reciting poetry, Helên wrote and perfomed sketches and songs for the show, which was very well received by audiences and reviewers alike.

Slam Poetry
Helên had her first taste of Slam Poetry in November 1998 at The Frog and Bucket in Manchester.

For the uninitiated, a Slam is a competition where poets perform a piece of their own work within a strict time limit. Members of the audience award scores. The highest scoring poet wins. Helên's first win came in April 1999 at The Green Room's 'Slam Bam Thank You Mam', hosted by Chloe Poems. Helên won a stapler shaped like a fish and was very happy.
