The only means of strengthening of one’s intellect is to make up one’s mind about nothing – to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts
John Keats

Strategy

Our Process

  1. Agree with you who are the people in your organisation who have a regular part to play in strategy development and steering and how quickly the work has to be done

  2. Interview them all at some length to get the background to facilitate the following stages and agree the time focus for the work.

  3. Agree with you an appropriate method to link this group for sufficient time

We use an expert facilitator to run each of the following meetings. Without one, your results will be heavily skewed towards those in your business with the most power. These individuals rarely have all the best ideas or see things from every angle.

Click on any of the meetings for the detailed format of each:

  4. First Meeting
Purpose - To provide foundations and open minds

    • Output - material for a vision statement
    • Output - a common view of the future environment for your business

  5. Second Meeting
Purpose - To provide some realism

    • Output - SWOT analysis

  6. Third Meeting
    Purpose - To quantify

    • Output - the group's goal or objective
    • Output - SMART objectives for important areas of the business
    • Output - agreement on the main obstacles that have to be tackled

  7. Fourth Meeting
Purpose - To find the best way to reach the goal

    • Output - the company strategy

  8. Fifth Meeting
Purpose - To put it all together

    • Output - the company mission statement

  9. The next step is for you to try to reduce the various outputs to one page, which shows the vision, the goal, the strategy and the mission statement. This will make it easier for you to communicate what you have decided.

  10. It would be good to invite your facilitator back to be a critical audience for the rehearsal of your presentation to the staff outlining the deliberations and decisions of the strategy group.

  11. The rest of your company now need to get involved. They need to understand what you have decided to do and why you have chosen the strategy. It is they who will need to split up the task into slices, allocate resources, decide how to measure progress and report to you and each other. There may be new insights and ideas from them and the strategy group will need to evaluate these and adopt those that are worthy - this is where we duck out, the ball is in your hands and you are running with it…..

    • Output - your business plans and budgets

We recommend a formal annual review of the outputs to revise them and bring them up to date. Companies in very fast moving businesses will need to review the outputs more frequently, perhaps every quarter.
