Behind The Scenes

Whilst it would be bad form to give away ALL the secrets to do with the making of "Time Quest Of Fear", we can show you a few glimpses behind the scenes with the aid of some rare and never before seen photos, taken during production!

Above we can see the rocket on the planet Dido as seen in Episode 1. As we will see later, despite clever camera angles and video effects suggesting otherwise, the planet Dido is actually only about 20cm square in size!

The different landscapes in the story were all actually located on the same piece of hardboard, which itself was less than a metre in length. Above you can see "Vortis", along with the archway on the planet Refusis, which is also the end of the space rocket. Also note the TARDIS in the above picture, waiting to be positioned into shot!

Some shots were taken from above, although again clever camera work and cropping obscures the fact that our cast could easily "step off" the edge of the moonscape they are standing on if they aren't careful...

The scenes of the TARDIS in space were actually filmed in the dark of a bathroom, with the small prop being picked out in torchlight. The torch was played on the wall to create interesting 'time vortex' like patterns, and the hand holding the ship was cropped out in post production.

A similar effect was used for the shot where a Cyberman falls through space. This time it worked so well that almost no further work on the frame was needed; the shot above is completely untreated.

No Zygon appears in the final story, although one poses above for a publicity still! Note also the black background erected behind the set; black is a good colour for cropping against because it doesn't leave visible bright lines around characters and sets.
