"Doctor Who and the Strange Country"

The Doctor Who TV series was in deep shit in 1985. The then-BBC head of serials, Fran Spade, had declared the last series to be rubbish. It cost too much to make, he claimed, citing the recent story "Curves Aplenty" (in which Doctor Who and his pretty girl assistants Terri and June investigate a time paradox in a brothel) as being inappropriate, and also wanted to know why a film crew had traveled to Barbados to film when the entire story had been set within a small lift. Worse still, lead man Hartnell's ever ailing performance had been criticised, Spade in particular noting the 92-year old actors recent propensity for changing the script (in the previous season's opener "Attack of the Ectomen", Doctor Who can clearly be heard telling a policeman to "fuck off", which was seen to set a bad example to youngsters). Producer Gerry Jules-Turnball was ordered to smarten up his act, and the standard Doctor Who season was slashed to just three adventures. Unfortunately, the team then turned in the most complex and rubbish season ever.

Jules-Turnball and his script editor Dougy Wayward devised a crap 'linking theme' to the season, which was to gain the overall title "Judgement of Dr Who". Because they had only three stories, and in an attempt to look really clever, they decided to have Doctor Who on trial for his life, charged with being a bit shit, thus mirroring the series' real life turmoil and really endearing them to their superiors. Evidence would be presented on a big screen, thus allowing Doctor Who himself to witness the adventures as they were played out. In addition, the Time Lords popular large-breasted assistant Peccy Bristols was to be written out, to be replaced by a new companion played by light entertainment star Binny Langworth. For the first story, "Doctor Who and the Strange Country", the production team employed veteran writer Barratt Homes to write a scene-setting adventure with which to begin the epic season.

The story begins with a tremendous special effects shot of Doctor Who's TARDIS being sucked into a massive space station. Costing £113,000 to make, this left just ten pounds with which to make the whole of the rest of the season. Doctor Who arrives in a strange court-room full of mysterious figures...

"We were beginning to think you had got a bit lost." said a voice. Doctor Who glanced round to see a man dressed in black - then he realised that he was standing in what looked like a big court room.
"This is a big court room in space." said a shapely female figure somewhere down below. "I am The Judge, and you, Doctor Who, are charged with being crap in the name of time and space!"
Doctor Who was visibly shocked.
"And who is this man over here?" he asked, jabbing a finger at the strange black-cloaked figure on the other side of the court room. "And where, may I ask, is my assistant Peccy?"

The figure named himself as simply The Barrister.
"She's been dispersed into the time vortex and sent floating in space!" he boomed. "But how long she remains safe depends on YOU Doctor!"
"Explain yourself you upstart!" stormed the riled Doctor Who.
"My lady Judge, I propose to present some evidence that Doctor Who here is nothing but an incorrugated meddlesome swine!" announced the Barrister. "I shall use the Screens of Knowledge!"
"But how can I defend myself hmmm? I've lost my memory you bastard!" cried Doctor Who, outraged.
"That," the Barrister replied simply. "Is what you must find out. What did you say?"
There was a stunned pause before the Barrister waved a hand dramatically, and a big wide-screen plasma telly lit up on the far wall. The Barrister and the Judge all watched the screen as one of Doctor Who's adventures began to unfold...

Doctor Who was in a rainy field, apparently somewhere near Dorsit, with Peccy Bristols.
"It's funny my dear." he said as they walked through the dewy corn. "This strange planet has the exact same mass, position, angle of rotation, colour, taste and general shape as the planet Earth! It's a bit of a coincidence!"
"You're so clever Doctor Who." said Peccy, holding his arm. "I could never say such a scientific thing."
"It's no joke child!" the Doctor said grimly. "There's something sinister here!"
Meanwhile, two intergalactic rogues, Snatch and Grabber, were aiming a big gun at Doctor Who from behind a nearby rock. Luckily, just as they fired the weapon, Doctor Who bent down to retrieve his fobwatch from Peccy Bristol's cleavage and the bolt whizzed over his head...

"This is just another one of my adventure tales sir!" commanded Doctor Who in the court room. The Judge pressed 'pause' on the tape and the Barrister smiled.
"That, Doctor Who, is exactly the point I was going to make." he said. There was a silence.
"Can we proceed with the evidence?" asked The Judge, curtly. And with that, she flicked her remote control and fast-forwarded the adventure for twenty minutes.
"Now let's see an interesting bit." she said, and the story on the screen continued...

The Doctor and Peccy had found an underground cavern, in which was scattered the remains of what looked like Liverpool Street Station.
"Where are we?" asked Peccy, shivering.
"It's a mystery my dear." Doctor Who replied. "But look!"
He dusted away some mud from the wall to reveal a grimy map of the British Isles.
"'You are here'" read Peccy in confusion. "What does it mean Doctor?"
"It means," Doctor Who began, drawing himself up to his full height, "That this so-called planet has a secret identity! And one that we must discover - before it's too late!"

At that moment there was a rustle from behind them and the two rogues, Snatch and Grabber, appeared.
"You must be after the secret of the missing tunnel people as well!" said Snatch, approaching the Doctor and Peccy.
"Tunnel people?" echoed Peccy. "What's going on here Doctor!"
"It's quite simple!" commanded Doctor Who suddenly, a gleam in his eye. "It's you!"
And with that, he pulled a double barreled shot gun from his cloak and shot Peccy twice through the head. Snatch and Grabber stood back in shock.
"What have you done Doctor Who?" said Snatch. "You've killed Peccy!"
"Yes!" said Doctor Who. "And just in the nick of time!"

The picture on the screen froze, as the tape jammed in the machine.
"So you see!" the Barrister cried in triumph. "Doctor Who is guilty of being rude, and then murdering his young assistant!"
"Explain yourself!" demanded the shocked Judge.
"Madam!" Doctor Who stood up and fixed the Barrister with a piercing gaze. "It's quite simple - the evidence has been changed! What we all saw happen on the screen, all that up there, didn't happen the way we saw it! Someone has been editing the tape!"
"Bunkum!" retorted the Barrister. "Doctor Who is guilty! And there is only one punishment!"

TO BE CONTINUED...

The mystery of why Doctor Who shot Peccy, the identity of the strange Barrister, the name of the mysterious planet, the person who fiddled with the tape and the secret of the missing tunnel people were all to be revealed in the remaining two stories of this season. Check back here later in the week to find out what happened in the second tale in the epic "Judgement of Dr Who" season!
