Comet Holmes - Detail

Date: 22nd Nov 2007

Equipment:: Canon 400D, 500mm lens @ f8, piggy back on Celestron Nexstar.

Exposure: 210 second ISO1600.

Processing: Stacked in DeepSkyStacker, Postprocessing in PixInsight Core 1.1

Comments: This was as large in the sky as the full moon and easily visible with the naked eye, even from in town. It started life as a very small mundane object and then flared up to approximately the diameter of the sun within a few days...a very spectacular event. For a while it was the largest object in the solar system.

Credits: Many thanks to Bill Scott for loan of his Celestron Nexstar telescope and to Simon Cuthbert for loan of his Tamron F8 mirror lens.
