Sally Hands - Curriculum Vitae

Sally Hands was educated in Edinburgh and studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh Art College 1972-77. She is a former director of the Swansea Print Workshop and produces tapestries, drawings, prints, papier-mâché and knitwear. She teaches papier-mâché, spinning, knitting, tapestry, papermaking, and printmaking. Sally also teaches piano and works as a part time teacher for a Community Care Project. She received a Welsh Arts Council Grant in 1997, and a Millennium Award in 1998.

1972-76 Drawing and Painting Department, Edinburgh College of Art. Awarded Diploma. Taught the piano part time.

1976-77 Andrew Grant Scholarship for postgraduate drawing and painting, Edinburgh College of Art.

1977-78 Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy; Scottish Society of Women Artists; City Art Centre, Edinburgh; Saltire Gallery, Edinburgh.

1979-86 Knitting business "Sally’s Woollies", starting as a one-woman business with a turnover of £2,000 and finishing in 1986 as a partnership with a turnover of almost £200,000. Famous customers include Elizabeth Taylor and Brooke Shields. The knitting appeared successfully in Harrods Xmas Catalogue and was subsequently widely copied. New York sales include Macys, Bloomingdales, Niemann Marcus. Publicity: Vogue, Womans Journal, Daily Mail, Daily Express, Scotsman, Evening News.

1986-88 Moved to Oxford and married. Returned to painting, started making tapestries, and joined Oxford Printmakers Cooperative. Two solo exhibitions.

1988-89 Moved to Urbana, Illinois, USA. Solo show in Illini Union Gallery - sold out. Sold tapestries and prints through Art Space, Atlanta, Georgia USA.

1990 Had a baby. Charles and Di tapestry accepted for publication in Fiberarts Book IV.

1990-92 Moved to Glasgow. Solo shows at Taylor Clark Partnership, Glasgow; Nicholson Square Methodist Church during Edinburgh Festival Fringe; The Studio, Fintry, Scotland.

1992-93 Moved to Geneva, Switzerland. Taught printmaking.

1993-94 Moved to Swansea. Continued printmaking , papier mâché and tapestries. Print bought for public collection Paintings in Hospitals.

1995 Solo show at Ceri Richards Gallery, Swansea.

1996 Teaching in Caer Las Project. Set up Print Studio at 20, The Strand, Swansea. Welsh Arts Council grant to visit France.

1997 Teaching for Arts Care. Exhibition with Sarah Hopkins in June in Ceri Richards Gallery.

1998 Received a Millennium Award from the charity MIND to mount exhibition related to mental health themes.

1999 Exhibition with Sarah Hopkins in June in Ceri Richards Gallery, Swansea. Artist's Book Fair, Barbican Centre

2000 Exhibited in Welsh Artist of the Year show, St. David's Hall, Cardiff.

2000-01 Solo show at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

2001 Printmaker of the Month, Wrexham Arts Centre.
