River Dart 2009 The trip started with the usual minibus slog down to Devon with surprisingly less bus drunkenness that I expected and we arrived with most people put to sleep by Duncan’s dubious tape collection. After sorting out who was sleeping where we headed off to the pub. After some drunken foolery and a cat attack on me we returned nosily to the not so warm bunkhouse for singing and waking up anyone who dared to fall asleep. Saturday started with the traditional fry up, much needed to warm us up and split up into a group for the upper Dart and the rest of us to do the lower. The river was at a good level and the sun kept shining, so only the people who went for swim got cold. Mike, Andy, Steve and Chris being the main culprits. After getting off the water we headed into town for some firewood in an effort to heat up the bunkhouse a little that night and then off for cream tea. Once we discovered the showers were cold (with Charlie as guinea pig) we headed for the pub for a hearty meal and many drinking games and random shots before returning to the bunkhouse. By this point we had run out of firewood and sent Chris S. out to find more, only for him to return with an enormous plank which had no chance of fitting in the fire, not that we didn’t try. More singing, drunkenness merriment and several jugs of doom followed. On Sunday we redid the same loop as the day before allowing the other leads to do the upper. Unfortunately the river was lower making the rapids a little less exciting, there were noticeably less swims and several people did the bridge jump at the end before we headed back to the bus and back on home to Brighton, stopping for yet another pub meal on route.
