Sussex Canoe Club Ball 2007
Saturday January 20th
Queens Hotel, Brighton

This year’s ball took place at the Queen’s Hotel near Palace Pier. The theme was ‘Tiaras and Crowns’. There was a massive turn out of 88 old and new faces. Everyone scrubbed up well and it made a change seeing people looking smart instead of the usual smelly dampness that seems to be the norm on trips. Various levels of effort were put into the headgear, ranging from elaborate metal crowns (Bri) to paper hats from Christmas crackers (several people). After a tasty 3 course meal, complete with enough free wine to keep even the hardiest drinkers happy, the annual awards ceremony took place. This is a chance for special (read, ‘embarrassing’) achievements throughout the year to be recognised, some more tongue in cheek than others. The awards, presented by Lee and Jo (both drunk) were:
  • Alex Berry - Puke of the Year
  • Chris Bull - Squeaky Caravan
  • Gareth Lee - Toilet Master
  • Ben Nolan And Dave Bell - Gary c*ck-sucker
  • Lee Rogers - Person Most Likely To Try and Sleep with a Fresher
  • Jo Savage - Most swims of the year
  • Dave Stevens - Best Crown
  • Duncan Stokes - Best Newcomer
  • Deb Thorpe & Doug Ashby - Most improved paddlers
  • Charlee Wakefield - Most Exposure
  • Sarah Walker - Best Tiara
Thanks to Lee for the list, drunkenness at the time has made me forget exactly who won what!
After the awards, most took to the dancefloor to throw some shapes (some threw more recognisable shapes than others) whilst some chose to play the ‘erotic dice game’ that came as part of Ben & Dave’s prize. I’m sure there’s plenty of embarrassing photos around from that one… The dancing, mingling and general having a good time carried on ‘til about 1am, when the hotel staff decided it was time for us to leave and everyone went their separate ways, including about 20 odd of us back to Lee’s for an ‘after show party’. The ball is definitely a night to be recommended!
