Beach and Sunset

A love of the beach and the sea inspired this selection of works.

  Blue Interruption

Abstract

These works developed through the desire to ‘play’ with the paint. I wanted to see what tensions would be created by placing different textures next to each other and by letting thin paint run down through the painting into much thicker areas of paint.

Wells Cathedral: in a Different Light

This body of work is based on Well’s Cathedral and the compositions formed by the scissor arches. Never before had one place inspired me to create so many works. I loved the curvaceous compositions created by looking through the scissor arches at different angles. I felt they should be portrayed in rich bright colour. Accuracy was not of great importance to me, I was more concerned with showing the impact the architecture had made on me. I was interested in shape, curve and light.

Whilst creating this body of work I looked at the work of Piranese, Robert Delaunay and John Piper. The two charcoal and conte works were inspired by Piranese. They were created in the negative, by rubbing out charcoal to create the image. With both works two views were overlaid.

Flamingos

I was interested in the forms created by the curving necks of flamingos in a local park.

I took many photos of the birds and manipulated these images in PhotoShop. This created an interesting link between the curves of the flamingos and the wire fence they were caged behind.

Flowers

With my flower paintings I tend to start off with a painting from observation and then the following paintings will be pared down to particular elements of that flower.

Cells and decay

A theme I have looked at on more than one occasion is decay and deterioration. This began by coming across an abandoned van in some woods. The van was completely rusted and plants were growing around it. It looked as if nature was claiming it back.

Through looking at this I also looked at fungi and images of fungi and decay as seen through microscopes.
