Artist Statement

I tend to work from observation and then create abstract compositions from the forms. My inspirations are usually from nature or architecture. There is a great deal of experimentation in my work, with the process often becoming an important part of the work. I enjoy exploring what the paint can do as well as adding textures and sometimes objects to the paint. For a number of years I have also been interested in puncturing the canvas with stitching. I like the broken line given by stitching and feel it adds another element to the work.

I am fascinated by the power of colour and the effect colour can have on moods and have been very interested in theories of colour being used to heal. I have found that a large use of yellow and orange gives feelings of happiness and energy and hope that others gain this feeling from my work as well.

With many works I enlarge an image or view so that it becomes out of context and no longer clear what it is. My main choice of medium is oil paint but I enjoy working in a variety of media and sometimes work with sculpture.
