TANG - Means the T'ang Dynasty of China and this reflects the cultural backgrounds shared between Korea and China (617 - 907 ad).

SOO - Means hand but also implies fist, punch, strike, defence, etc.

DO - Means way of life or art.

When the three words are put together they mean, "the classical martial art of Korea, which was influenced by the T'ang Dynasty of China

BUT - the purpose of Tang Soo Do is not just for fighting. It is to enhance your total self through perfecting the techniques. If you must defend yourself, the development of proper spirit is as equally important as the physical skills developed. If you wish to master Tang Soo Do, it is not enough just to have the physical skill and technical knowledge, you must delve into its innermost spirit and attain the state of mind known as "moo shim", which means "empty mind".
