Reiki Treatments

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of hands-on healing, which was developed by its founder Mikao Usui Sensei in Japan, and first became more accessible in the West during the 1980s. Its name means 'boundless' (rei), 'universal life force' (ki).

It is not a religious dogma, and people from all religions can become Reiki practitioners or receive Reiki treatments from others.

It is similar to practices like Shiatsu, Qi Gong and Tai Chi, in that it 'uses' the same energy, which is also known as 'chi' or 'ki'. The difference is that a Reiki practitioner acquires the ability to channel this energy through their hands.

When you practice Feng Shui in the home, you work with 'chi' energy. Careful placement of objects, plants and furniture ensures that 'chi' flows freely throughout your environment, which can make you feel better physically and emotionally. A Reiki practitioner channels this energy directly through their own hands.

Reiki Treatments

So how can Reiki help you, and when should you have a treatment?

As the therapists of Serenity Reiki are not medically trained, we cannot legally diagnose illness or claim to cure serious complaints. However, we do believe that the mind, body and spirit should not be viewed as separate entities and that in treating one aspect, so the whole benefits.

For example, if you are extremely stressed or anxious, this can have a bad effect on your general health. Reiki can help greatly with stress-related conditions such as insomnia, panic attacks and anxiety. It can also be beneficial if you are undergoing medical treatment such as chemo-therapy, which has unpleasant side effects. An increasing number of hospitals now have Reiki therapists at work in their oncology units. We have been surprised - and pleased - by the number of trained nurses who have come to our school to learn Reiki.

Also, if you have undergone a traumatic life experience, Reiki can help you find inner balance once more. It soothes, relaxes and calms you.

Reiki is also good for alleviating pain in sore muscles. People with bad backs, shoulders or knees can benefit from regular Reiki treatments.

What Happens in a Reiki Treatment?

When you come to us for a treatment, you first lie down on a comfortable futon, fully clothed. A therapist will sit behind your head and place their hands, for several minutes at a time, in various positions on your face, head and shoulders. Depending on the length of the treatment, they will then move position and lay their hands on your torso (avoiding any private areas), and then move on to the feet.

If you have a back problem, you can lie on your front so the therapist can direct Reiki into the affected area. Some people with bad backs find it painful to lie down, in which case you can be treated sitting up on a stool.

You'll usually feel heat, which is noticeably more than simple body heat, emanating from the therapist's hands. Sometimes, Reiki can also be experienced as quite cold, again noticeably different to someone simply having cold hands.

Treatments usually take an hour, with most of that time taken with treating the head and shoulder areas, although we can pay attention to a specific area of the body if you know that is where a problem lies. We will discuss your requirements before we begin the treatment.

Quite a few people drift off to sleep while they're receiving Reiki - it's that relaxing.
