Shane won the Waltham Forest Talent Competition in the summer of 1968 with the song 'If I Were a Rich Man' from the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof'. First prize was a fountain pen, biro and pencil set.

In the Autumn of 1968, Shane joined the local church choir. He would stay at St Johns Church Leytonstone for eight years.

Singing was not enough. Shane's first introduction to playing music was the violin. He reached grade six before quitting the violin in favour of the piano.
This is probably Shane's one and only official school photo taken at Tom Hood in 1975
What a difference twenty years and a haircut will do. Shane normally found himself behind the camera rather than in front of it, so photos were somewhat rare.
It was a few more years before Shane is seen posing at a piano.
Shane's father, John, is the bearded pianist and founder member of the band 'Easy Rhythm'. Fred Long, the drummer was also a founder member and the drumkit he plays here was to remain with the Ward family until it was sold, still in good working order, in 2005

Shane's father, John Ward, remained the only founder member to survive the Easy Rhythm, however, Shane's mother, Faith, had been the manager behind the scenes for years. Eventually she became the compere, fronting the band until ill health forced John to retire in around 1996. John is seen here playing the accordion. Roy, playing saxophone and clarinet, stayed with the band until the end.
In 2006, Shane (second from the left at the back) managed to commit this rather special and rare opportunity to his digital camera. His wife, Sharon, (blue top at the front) is joined by Sharon's mother, Anita, their four children, their partners and three grandchildren.
