No Smoking: Diary of a Quitter
What can you buy for a family friend that is cheaper than a packet of cigarettes, lasts longer, improves health and has the potential to lengthen their life expectancy? It is the ultimate stocking filler, packed full of support, warnings, advice and a few silly songs. 'No Smoking: Diary of a Quitter' is a must for those New Year resolution hopefuls who really want to quit being friends with his great ash holiness, Mr Nick O'Teen.
'No Smoking: Diary of a Quitter' was written in 'real time' as the author experienced his personal withdrawal from 28 years of smoking. Having quit for over three years now, Shane has experienced first hand the trials and temptations associated with nicotine deprivation. The book explores the pitfalls, traps and psychological battles that any quitter must overcome. And if you need a distraction there is a whole chapter of poems, office graffiti and other silly, humourous stuff composed by Shane in his own inimitable style.
The best books on quitting smoking are written by people who have quit smoking. Anyone else, whatever their qualification cannot know what it is like to battle a nicotine addiction. Shane tried the method by Allen Carr (who, incidentally, was no expert but just an accountant from Putney in London). Allen's method worked for some but not for Shane or for many others he discovered on his personal journey. For some there was no 'easy way'. Hence 'Stop Smoking: Diary of a Quitter' was written for those who, quite frankly, welcome all the help they can get. What you're getting here is one of the life lines you will need as you try to kick the habit. And what is ridiculous about it is that it costs you peanuts while you save a fortune by quitting. Famous or not, Shane has already published part one of his critically acclaimed autobiography entitled, "Walking the Path" . We live in a climate where desperate but unimaginative book publishers are trying to cash in on the autobiographies of instant celebrities who, aside from their curious ascent to notability, are about as interesting as the contents of an empty vacuum flask.
There are probably more people jammed together in a crowded London underground train, taking their usual journey to work on a Monday morning, who have life stories to tell with the richness of experience and genuine excitement, than the whole gamut of celebrity autobiographies on the market today. Autobiographies of the famous have one notable let down for any reader, which is the totally predictable and inevitability conclusion of the 'thats how I became famous' ending. People who are not famous (yet at least) can be much more exciting. They have no preconceived ideas of what in their lives may or may not lead them to a point of fame. Consequently the plot is not commanded by publishers and agents trying to manufacture the desired triumphant ending that should justify bumping up significantly the individuals guest appearance fees. People who are not famous are more likely to have incredibly interesting lives with remarkable events that completely outstrip the inevitable predictability of known celebrities.
"Walking the Path" is available for free as a word document from Authors Den, where Shane has been a member since February 2003. He received 50,000 visitors on this site in 2005/6, 67800 visitors in 2006/7 and close to 90,000 in 2007/8. The book attracted over 4000 readers in the first three years of its publication and is still a popular download. You can get your copy today with the knowledge that it is quite a story and you will not be disappointed for making the effort.
