Block Paving Details

Tobermore / Origin Paving offer an exciting range of paving materials & we are finding their Tegula range to be very popular with it's vast range of colours, superb durability & very long manufacturers guarantee.

For our regular block paving work we use Tobermore, Marshalls & Bradstone 60mm thick blocks.

Block Paving Specifications

Once the existing driveway has been excavated we install a Polyfelt geotextile membrane as a separation layer to prevent intrusion of weeds etc. into the drive from below. It also has the added benefit of further strengthening the driveway by distributing the load of a vehicle. Our block paved driveways are laid on an MOT bed of between 50 & 100mm thick, depending upon existing ground conditions. This layer is compacted with our 150kg 25kN Wacker. Next, an approx. 50mm thick bed of zone 2 grit sand compacted with our smaller Wacker or Belle Dual Force PC400 then screeded to the correct level for paving. We don't use little soil compactors for the sub-base!

The paving is installed & cut in accordingly. When complete, the drive is compacted with kiln dried sand swept into the joints to provide a strong, durable surface able to withstand the everyday requirements of a driveway. Once the excess sand is swept away a bonding agent is applied to the drive in order to bind the fine particles of kild dried sand together, further enhancing the strength of the drive.

Kerb/Edging Specifications

The open edges of our driveways are retained using concrete to hold either the perimeter of the blocks or some form of edging block such as KS & KL kerbs or concrete edgings.

The edgings are laid on concrete and haunched with concrete to form a single solid cradle. It's a highly important aspect of a block paved driveway that is often overlooked by other teams - without it the blocks will move with the repeated movement of traffic.
