Things to see and do over the Wedding Weekend

flow18.gif (1478 bytes)If you're down for the weekend (or longer), there are links below to lots of interesting places to explore. Do remember to come to the Wedding though!

In the Hotel
We have exclusive use of the hotel until 11am on Monday morning. The hotel has a large toy box (I'm told), a sauna and swimming pool (handily placed near the bar). The Mulberry Gardens behind the factory shop are also worth a visit (see wedding photographs).

Shepton Mallet
Shepton  Mallet is a historic market town with a population of just under 7,000. A weekly market still takes place around the Market Cross on Fridays . Among the household names based here are Matthew Clark, the home of Blackthorn cider, and the fashion designers, Mulberry. To the south is the Royal Bath and West of England Showground.

  • Old Shepton has  many fine examples of cloth merchants' houses dating back to 17th Century. The town gained prosperity as a market town and wool trading centre in the 15th Century, and for cloth weaving in the 17th Century. Many of the historic buildings stand on banks of the River Sheppey. It was an important source of energy for the silk and woollen mills, and the owners built their homes close to the factories.
  • The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul stands close to the town centre. The architectural history of the building poses a challenging puzzle to those interested in the development of churches.
  • The Market Cross dates from 1500, and is still at the centre of the weekly Friday market. Nearby is a remnant of The Shambles, a 15th Century covered market stall.
  • In 1685, the Market Place was the scene of several executions, by order of the notorious Judge Jefferies following the Duke of Monmouth's Pitchfork Rebellion.
  • Collett Park features an ornamental lake and aviary, and has a well equipped play area for smaller children.
  • A display at the Tourist Information and Heritage Centre tells 3,000 years of the social and industrial history of the town, from pre-Roman times to the present.

Shepton Mallet online has more details of interesting buildings, maps and local history.  There is  a Home and Living Show planned  at the Bath and West Showground from 3rd-5th March. Shepton is also the home of Babycham and King Arthur - a well known visitor to  the Thatched Cottage Inn.

Shopping
  • The Mulberry Factory Shop sells discounted luxury clothes, gifts and fabrics from the famous label. Prices are still a bit on the steep side but there is a good tea shop to help you come to terms with your relative penury.  Mulberrys main website explains all (although not why there stuff is so expensive).
  • Clarks Village: fun factory outlet with lots of shoes.
  • Bath and Bristol : Lots of shops including the nearest Debenhams (see Wedding List)
