Traditional Music in the Glens of Antrim

Regular Musicians at Johnny Joe's

James McElheran is one of two button-accordionists who regularly play in McCollam's, Cushendall. He has an extensive repertoire of Irish and Scottish tunes and is an experienced ceili band musician, having featured with the Ard Ri band of Belfast, and most recently the Denis Sweeney Band of Antrim. He is especially proficient at playing for Set-dancing, but equally at home in the parlour of Johhny Joe's where his accordion lends an air of authority to any session. His wife Caitlin is an accomplished singer in both Irish and English.

James plays a variety of accordions - seen here with his grey 2-coupler Paolo Soprani and enjoying a quick draw on the pipe. James is from near Cushendun, about 4 miles from Cushendall.

P J Hill is from Ballycastle and is another regular in Johhny Joe's. He plays the banjo and also sings. "P J" to his friends, is an enthusastic member of Ballycastle branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireannand performs at the many Festivals and Fleadhs. He is also a teacher in nearby Coleraine.

Dominic McNabb and Leo Brown are also from Ballycastle and play regularly with P J Hill and others in McCarroll's Bar in that town as well as in McCollam's, Cushendall. Dominic is a master fiddler, being both sweet in tone and rythmic with the dance tunes, but he is especially notable for his extensive repertoire of Irish and Scottish tunes.

Because of the proximity to Scotland, many Glens musicians have a good selection of Scottish music in their repertoire.

Leo plays a 2-coupler red B/C Paolo Soprani in the "Paddy O'Brien" style, and has appeared with Dominic on television's 'Corner House' series as well as around the Fleadhs.
