More Hurling in the Glens

N. Antrim hurlers 1906 Hurling and Gaelic football are organised within the overall umbrella of the Gaelic Athletic Association, which was founded in the late 1800s as part of the National Revival which also gave rise to the Gaelic League, which promotes the Irish language and culture. In 1906 the Gaelic League held its first Feis ns nGleann in Glenariff, including sports competitions, and this team, which included some Cushendun players, represented North Antrim in the Feis hurling championship.

Organised hurling clubs became well established in the region in the 20th Century, although there is evidence that the game was played here in former times. There is a reference in the old song from Glendun Airde Cuan, to playing hurling on the "white strand" (beach) each Sunday. The local club Cushendun Emmets takes its name from the Irish patriot Robert Emmet, and their current playing field is beside the same white beach. This group of Cushendun players were photographed after a team practice in the 1930s. Cushendun Emmets Team 1930s
