Denis Sweeney (Donnchadh Mac Suibhne) from Randalstown, Co. Antrim, is a long-time fiddle teacher whose students have won many awards at Fleadh Cheoil etc. He created a series of four tutorial books of practice pieces for his students, plus this book of Slow Airs. Now he has recorded all those tunes, with his learner's tips and tricks, for Glens Music so that we can offer a complete self-teaching fiddle course for those who do not have a local traditional Irish fiddle teacher, or who just want to improve their skill and widen their repertoire. A familiarity with music notation is useful but reading notes is taught from Unit 1. You can have the Slow Airs Unit at a special price if you buy the complete fiddle course. All prices include mailing worldwide.
Slow Airs form a very substantial section of traditional music, and they deserve to be played a lot more. A musician could spend years making a special study of Slow Airs only to find that there is always more to learn, because there is such richness of melody and variety of styles to be found in them. This Unit is, as the book title says, just an introduction to the Slow Air, aimed especially at younger players. It begins with some song-tunes of moderate and fairly slow tempo which have something of the style of Slow Airs in their composition. It gradually moves on to what could be more exactly classed as proper Slow Airs, although there are still a few "easier" tunes mixed in. Tunes include The Coolin, Ardaí Cuan, Bean Dubh a' Gleanna, Slievenamon...altogether 40 of the most beautiful Irish melodies.
