One guitar, but at the flick of a switch it can emulate many.

This instrument is I think unique in the realm of guitar synths (although it's not really a synth, more a guitar emulator).
Essentially, the string vibration is picked up by a special bridge (notice there are no pickups), this vibration is fed to the onboard computer that then models the selected guitar sound based on the input data (which string, frequency, amplitude etc) and parameters of the guitar to be modelled (body shape, pickup type/position etc).

The selection of onboard sounds is very impressive, telecaster, stratocaster, les paul, semi acoustic, acoustic, 12 string electric, 12 string acoustic, even sitar and banjo. Also some open tuning configurations are available, all at the flick of a switch.

Given a rainy Sunday afternoon and a new guitar it seemed an ideal opportunity to make a small demo recording using some of the sounds in the guitar. This recording is made clean, the guitar straight into the recording, no reverb, no compression, no effects at all, just guitar (about 6 or 7 different selections from the default built in settings). As a result it sounds a little flat but does give a good idea of what the guitar is capable of - variax.mp3 (1.0M)

And to complete the deal, there is a software package (extra cost) that allows custom guitars to be made, selecting the body type, pickups (make and position) even down to the value resistor to use in the tone circuit.
