Day 11 - 12/11/05

What a night!
The net may have cut down the number of bites but there were still too many. So in the middle of the night it was on with the clothes, trousers tucked into socks to leave no opening unguarded.
Then the rustling starts, you can here them scurry around in the roof and floor of the bungalow followed by a 'plop' as they drop into the water and head to the next bungalow - rats (on a per night basis this is the most expensive place on the trip, and I get to share my room that has no air-con, nor electricity, with rats).

But with the vista that greets us for breakfast, it's worth it.

A not unwelcome early start considering, not too many birds but great scenery and creatures, we see dusky langur and giant squarral.

Squarral or squirrel, several times I said 'squirrel' and was corrected to squarral but on checking the Internet back home, it definitely is Giant Squirrel.

Before lunch, the trip to the waterfall.

It was to be an hour and a half, there and back or just there we weren't sure, but we set off in the longtail boat. Arriving at the base of a waterfall the mission became clear it was a trek up the waterfall. This was no Niagara but it was none the less beautiful to walk up and see all the little rock pools and tree formations.

Afternoon trip in the longtail to see the lime stone cliffs and then paddle to see the rock formations, beautiful scenery, and saw hornbill on the wing again (they make an amazing sound as they fly).

The evening brought some excitement, yelps from near the kitchen caused by one of the boys that works here finding a Cobra in the spare bedding, weapons were mustered (broom handles and big sticks) and the poor creature was knocked senseless.

So now I have come to terms with sharing my room with water rats tonight there is the outside chance of a cobra too - I hope I sleep well, but not too well.

The evening was rounded off with a game of cards during which one of the boys that helps out on the boats produced a blow fish he had just caught.

So now off to sleep in the mosquito net which has so many holes it won't stop any bugs but will stop the rats investigating me in the night - as for the cobra, let's just hope there was just the one.
