A project to practice skills and use most of the operations of the woodworking tools was needed to make mistakes and hopefully learn.

Bar Skittles seemed a good choice, it would required lots of lathe work for the skittles and also the turning of a sphere.

Bar skittles conventionally consist of a raised diamond on which the skittles stand and a tall pole from which a ball hangs. These parts sit in a large tray that the skittles fall into when knocked over
The ball is swung around the pole to hit the skittles.

Since this would probably not fit in my car a novel design approach was needed. I decided that everything should store inside the central diamond, skittles, ball and pole. By giving this box an angled hinged lid it would be possible to also provide the mount point for the pole.

It sounded easy enough....

This is the box, made from walnut, cut down to 6mm thick, and biscuit joined to provide the width. A small brass catch holds it shut, and the skittle positions are marked by inserts of beech.
