HANG THE FLAG OUT MRS. JONES

&

LITTLE BOY LITTLE GIRL

Fivepenny Piece

EMI Columbia DB 8558

Release Date: 3rd April 1969

45rpm 7" single

Side Title (composed by) Matrix No.
A :  Hang The Flag Out Mrs. Jones (Meeks-Radcliffe) 7XCA 32418
B :  Little Boy Little Girl (Meeks-Radcliffe) 7XCA 32419

Notes: The band's second single - again on EMI's Columbia label - was more pop oriented than the first single. The song is believed to have been the one they sang on the TV show New Faces (can anyone confirm this? Don't Say Nowt - Tell Us Owt! ). In any case, this was a commercial sounding single which by rights should have been a chart hit, especially with all the TV publicity. Inexplicably, it wasn't.

Once again, both sides of the record were produced by "Finito" for Noel Gay Productions (abbreviated this time on the labels to "N. G. P."). And both songs were again written by John Meeks and Colin Radcliffe, although this time the wrong spelling "Meek-Radcliffe" was used on both sides of both the demo and regular issue singles. Once again the record is credited to Fivepenny Piece (just two words, no "The").

The 'A' side is a strong pop song with a catchy tune and a bright, brass-led arrangement and it seems surprising the record didn't reach the charts, as noted above. The 'B' side is perhaps less distinguished but has a pleasant tune and a more folky arrangement. Neither track on the single ever appeared on any Fivepenny Piece album, making this single very sought after by collectors.
