Say the word shark to the average person and the first thing that comes to mind is an image of a Great White Shark. The Great White was the shark used in the film Jaws, so naturally this also leads to thoughts of people being killed and eaten by sharks.

In reality there are over 350 species of sharks worldwide and only 12 of these species are in any way capable of causing harm to humans. Some fully grown sharks, such as the Pygmy Shark, are so small they will fit into the palm of your hand. Then there is the largest of all, the Whale Shark; these can be as long as 30 meters but they eat plankton, not people! Although obviously you wouldn't want to get too close.

Sharks have been on the planet for over ??? million years, arriving before the dinosaurs and are at the very top of the aquatic food chain. They have evolved very little during that time as they are the ultimate predator and have little need to adapt. Nothing poses as a threat to them, well.......until recently!
