If you’re serious about becoming the next
Segovia or Django Reinhardt, then I don’t think I can help. But if you’re a
beginner or improver, playing the steel-string acoustic, and interested in folk/blues,
then I probably can.
I can help
you through the basics, from the first position chords, through syncopated
finger-picking, to exploring open tunings. I can show you some tricks using
relatively simple techniques that will make you sound more impressive. If you’re
interested in playing to accompany singing, there’s lots we can cover that will
help you along, particularly the use of transposition and inversions so that
you can find a key and a sound that will suit your voice.
I’m no
expert in musical theory, but we can look at some fundamentals that will help
you understand the structures underlying the music. We can look at ways to make
practice sessions more productive and some hints for performance.
Above
all, we will enjoy playing this most versatile of instruments!
I prefer
to teach at home – which is in Lady Bay, West Bridgford – so that we have
access to recordings and other references, but will travel within 20 miles of
Nottingham if that suits you better. Most evenings are available except Tuesday
when I’m at the Willow Roots – why not come and listen at the folk club to see
what you’d be letting yourself in for...
Lessons
are £15 per hour if you come to me; £17.50 if I come to you. First session is £10 to see if we
get on!
