These
are the first of this Year's ducklings to be brought in to us.
Because
of the dangers facing mothers and their ducklings, female ducks
will choose the most seemingly foolish of places to make their
nests. When all of the ducklings hatch she will then do her best
to take them to water.
Sadly,
ducklings are so highly predated that even one survivor of a clutch
of ducklings is a good outcome for a mother. We therefore advise
people not to take a mother and ducklings to water if they have
nested in the garden, but to round them all up and take them to
a rescue centre where they can grow up in safety.
Sometimes,
however, catching the mother is not that easy and she will go
off and leave the babies if repeatedly disturbed.
The
mother of these ducklings had nested in a truck stop and then
abandoned the ducklings when people stepped in to help her out.
Luckily
for the ducklings however, they were rounded up and brought in
to us where they will stay until they are fully grown at 2 months
old at which time they will be released.
