Known
affectionately as the “Swim Team” due to the big pools
of water they left all over their pen after their bathing activities,
these two Black Headed Gulls were brought in separately but with
identical injuries. One was found in Luton and the other in Dunstable
but both had broken the smaller of the two forearm bones in their
left wings.
As
fractures go they really were not too bad, the small bone was
being supported by the larger bone and was a clean break in the
middle making it easy to strap up and support after x-rays were
carried out.
Both
birds were with us for about 6 weeks, 4 of which were spent with
their wings strapped to their sides to immobilise them whilst
the bones repaired. The 2 weeks after the strapping was removed
were used for them to exercise their wings and to waterproof their
feathers. Each morning we would put them outside in a very large
outside pen to swim and flutter about getting their muscles back
in order and each night we would put them back into their indoor
pen to rest.
We
had no need to decide for them when they were ready to go as at
the end of the last two weeks we put them out into the outside
pen, went in to make a coffee and came back to find them wandering
around the garden! Without so much as a bye and thank you, both
birds flew off circled and were gone; no doubt back to join their
family groups.
