This
is Jasper, an 8 week old Otter cub found by the banks of the River
Great Ouse in the North end of Bedfordshire. He was brought in
to us suffering from hypothermia and had seemingly been abandoned
by his Mother. This is the first Otter ever brought in to us.
On
his arrival the poor cub was collapsed and we immediately set
about gently warming him up. Once he had started to respond to
treatment he was given some warm rehydration fluids. This treatment
went on throughout the whole of the first night.
By
the next morning, the cub was well enough to be interested in
his first bottle of milk formula. Within a couple of weeks the
otter was weaned and was necessary for us to set about finding
the otter some other cubs. When we had an offer from Les Stocker
of Tiggywinkles to transport the otter to Scotland to Hessilhead
Wildlife Rescue where there are fantastic release sites, our minds
were made up. Hessilhead will introduce him to other Otter cubs
and when the group are 9 months old they will be slowly soft released
into waters surrounding the centre.
Obviously,
when an animal has had the intensive care that this little otter
had, it is always hard to say goodbye, but we know that with more
territories, fewer roads, less persecution, purer waters and plentiful
fish, our little otter is going to have the great new start that
he really deserves.
