Most welfare groups have a blanket policy of telling people to leave baby birds alone. However, it is not that simple. In some cases the parents will not come down for baby birds, so how do you know if a bird needs help?

Firstly, Is it a nestling or a fledgling?

If the bird is a nestling, it should be picked up as soon as possible. It is likely to be cold, so please warm the bird up by holding it in your hand. Giving a cold bird water or food is likely to kill it so please do not do this. If you are able to get to us, please contact us immediately.

If you are not near to us, you can find out what to do as a temporary measure here.

Birds of Prey, Ducklings, Pigeons and Collared Doves are the exception. If found, NEVER leave them where they are.

The parents of owls, raptors, ducklings, pigeons and collared doves will not continue to feed them once they are on the ground.

These birds must ALWAYS be picked up or they will die of starvation and dehydration.

Please do not try to feed any of these birds or give them fluids as they require specialist feeding and can die if fed incorrectly.
