Mookie and Malcolm - RIP

A bit about me and mine!

I'm Sam Covington MAAT1, Dip French, BA (Open): bookkeeper, grandmother, Open University Graduate and student, animal rights activist, francophile and lover of any old red plonk - preferably Italian!

I was in the WRAF, my daughter was born in 1968 and I married the late Neil Vause in December 1973. In 1976 I returned to England where I worked first at the Royal Lancaster Hotel and then I met the O'Connor brothers - property developers, for whom I worked for seven years. In 1983 I joined a very successful theatre sound company in North London where I still work.

I turned 60 in 2008 - which was quite a revelation - I hadn't realised quite how many benefits there were to it! I also joined Facebook - against my better judgement, and Flickr.

Tiggie and Malcolm in 1994 - no larger pictureI live in West London with my elderly cat Tiggie. Born in 1994 Tiggie (pictured left with her late brother "The Very Reverend Malcolm") has been my owner since kittenhood.

For fun (and personal development of course!) I study - currently Italian with friends round my kitchen table, and with the Open University - but more about that on my Study pages.

I also enjoy gardening, reading, music (pretty much everything except rap, hip hop and other mindless genres) and and seeing friends. I loathe exercising - and should do more, although my neighbour Maureen and I do take the occasional turn around the new Westfield Centre in Shepherd's Bush!

For those of you confused by my various names - I was born, and soon afterwards my parents named me Cherrill Mary. I don't know why because Mummy was called Beryl Mary - conventional spelling. When I was in the RAF I acquired the nickname of Sam which was marvellous because everyone could pronounce it and spell it - so I have been Sam ever since.

The worst name-period was when I was married to my first husband. Mail order shopping by phone as Cherrill Vause of Frithville Gardens was a nightmare and I was usually addressed as Mrs V-a-u-s-e !

I have now reverted very happily to my maiden name and you may call me Miss Covington, Sam or Samantha - but if you call me Cherrill I shall think you are my parent!
