The White Hart
Back to Old Ely in pictures
With thanks to May and Dick Taylor (ex landlords of the White Hart) for use of the photograph and painting.

A horse and cart are in the passageway. painted by local artist Sue Galloway.
The
White Hart in the Market Square, Ely may have been in existence in the 14th
Century and certainly did in the 15th. There is some 15th Century
timber framing in the passageway of the building which can still be seen. Due
to re-development the White Hart is now Tindalls and Size-Up. When Ely became
the centre of drainage operations in the 17th Century the White
Hart was used as a meeting place. In the 18th Century The White
Hart hosted coroners inquests etc and used when discussions took place in 1816
between the Littleport Rioters and Magistrates of Ely.
The
White Hart was a coaching house as it had plenty of bedrooms and ample space
at the rear for stabling.
