CHOIR PROFESSIONALS
John Oldfield Accompanist

John has been with the choir for more than thirty years after taking over from his uncle Clifford and for several months took over as Musical Director following the departure of Alan Jenkins, predecessor.
He has made a significant contribution to the choir’s success, enhancing performances with a fine sense of musicianship.
He began music lessons at the age of seven with Dorothy Byram of Honley and later studied with the celebrated Clifford Hellawell at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he gained his ARMCM.
As a teenager, John won many prizes at musical festivals, including the coveted J W Pearce Prize at the Mrs Sunderland Musical Competition . Until his retirement, he was Head of Music at Almondbury High School and for some years was choirmaster at Brockholes Methodist Church. Six years ago he was appointed accompanist to Honley Ladies Choir.

George, who last year completed twenty five years service with the choir, has been playing the organ for more than fifty years, having been appointed organist at the age of fourteen at what was then the Salem Methodist Church in Berry Brow.
He is, at present, organist at Newsome Parish Church and Armitage Bridge Parish Church and accompanist for the Honley Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He is also in frequent demand by several other local churches and organisations eager to use his talents.
George, who studied the organ with the well-known organist and teacher F W Greenwood, went on to win success at the Mrs Sunderland Musical Competition and other music festivals. He was elected President of the Huddersfield Organists’ Association in 1984-85.
